JOYLIT COB-480-WW

JOYLIT 24V COB LED Strip Lights Instruction Manual

Model: COB-480-WW

Introduction

Thank you for choosing JOYLIT 24V COB LED Strip Lights. This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient installation and operation of your LED strip lights. Please read it thoroughly before use and retain it for future reference.

Safety Information

  • This product operates on DC 24V. Using an incorrect voltage (e.g., 12V or 110V/220V AC directly) will damage the strip and may pose a safety hazard.
  • Ensure the power supply is disconnected before any installation, cutting, or connection procedures.
  • The LED strip is rated IP20 for indoor use only. Do not expose to moisture or outdoor elements.
  • While the strip operates at a safe low voltage, it can generate heat. For prolonged use or high output, consider installing it in an aluminum channel for better heat dissipation.
  • Avoid direct eye exposure to the illuminated strip for extended periods.
  • Do not bend the strip sharply or apply excessive force, as this may damage the internal circuitry.
  • Ensure proper polarity when connecting the strip to the power supply or dimmer. Incorrect polarity can cause damage.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation is key to the performance and longevity of your LED strip lights. Please follow these steps carefully.

1. Required Components (Sold Separately)

  • 24V DC Power Supply: A stable 24V DC power supply is essential. Ensure its wattage capacity exceeds the total wattage of the LED strip(s) you are installing. For a 16.4ft (5m) strip, a 90W power supply is required. For multiple strips, calculate total wattage (approx. 5.5W/ft).
  • LED Dimmer (Optional): If dimming functionality is desired, a compatible 24V LED dimmer is needed.
  • Aluminum Channel (Recommended): For optimal heat dissipation and a finished look, especially in high-output applications.
  • 2PIN 10MM Solderless Connectors (Optional): For connecting cut sections or extending the strip without soldering.

2. Planning Your Installation

Before cutting or adhering the strip, plan the layout. Measure the desired length and identify cutting points. The strip can be cut every 5cm (1.95 inches) at designated marks.

3. Power Supply Connection

Connect the LED strip to a compatible 24V DC power supply. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). For lengths up to 5 meters, a single power supply with an adapter can be used. For longer runs or multiple strips, a larger transformer and parallel wiring may be necessary to prevent voltage drop and ensure uniform brightness.

Image: Wiring diagram illustrating power supply connections. For a 5-meter strip, a DC 24V 5A adapter can be used. For lengths exceeding 5 meters, a DC 24V 10A power supply connected to a transformer (AC 100V-220V) is recommended, with multiple strips wired in parallel.

Important Notes:

  • Do not use a 12V power supply; the lights will not illuminate.
  • Do not connect directly to 110V/220V AC; the strip will be damaged.
  • Insufficient wattage from the power supply will result in dim or flickering lights.
Comparison of LED strip brightness with different power inputs: 12V 5A (no light), 24V 2A (dim), and 24V 5A (bright).

Image: Visual guide demonstrating the effect of different power inputs on the LED strip. A 12V 5A input yields no light, a 24V 2A input results in dim lighting, and a 24V 5A input provides optimal brightness.

4. Adhering the LED Strip

  1. Clean the installation surface thoroughly. Ensure it is dry, smooth, and free of dust or grease.
  2. Peel off the protective backing from the 3M adhesive tape on the back of the LED strip.
  3. Carefully press the strip onto the desired surface, applying firm and even pressure along its entire length to ensure strong adhesion.

5. Preventing Short Circuits

When making connections, ensure that exposed wires do not touch the yellow PCB or solder joints, as this can cause a short circuit and damage the strip.

Operation

Once installed and powered, your JOYLIT COB LED Strip Lights are ready for use.

Dimming Functionality (with optional dimmer)

If you have connected a compatible 24V LED dimmer, you can adjust the brightness of the strip from 1% to 100%. This allows for versatile lighting effects, from subtle ambient light to bright task lighting.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Gently wipe the surface of the LED strip with a soft, dry cloth if dust accumulates. Do not use liquid cleaners or abrasive materials.
  • Heat Management: While designed for efficient heat dissipation, ensure adequate airflow around the strip. If installed in an enclosed space, consider an aluminum channel to prevent overheating, which can shorten lifespan.
  • Connections: Periodically check all connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
LED strip does not light up.No power, incorrect voltage, incorrect polarity, loose connection, damaged strip.
  • Verify power supply is plugged in and functional.
  • Ensure a 24V DC power supply is used.
  • Check all connections for correct polarity (+ to +, - to -).
  • Secure all connections.
  • Inspect the strip for visible damage.
Lights are dim or flickering.Insufficient power supply wattage, voltage drop over long runs, faulty dimmer.
  • Ensure power supply wattage meets or exceeds the strip's requirements.
  • For long runs, consider parallel wiring or using multiple power injection points.
  • Test with a different dimmer or bypass the dimmer to check if it's the cause.
Sections of the strip are not lighting up.Damaged section, poor connection at a cut point, short circuit.
  • Inspect the non-working section for physical damage.
  • Check connections at cut points, especially if solderless connectors were used.
  • Ensure no exposed wires are causing a short circuit.
Adhesive is not holding.Improper surface preparation, unsuitable surface material.
  • Ensure the surface was clean, dry, and smooth before application.
  • Use additional mounting clips or an aluminum channel for more secure installation.
