1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation of your DAVITU HoldPeak HP-890CN Digital Multimeter. Please read this manual thoroughly before use and retain it for future reference.
The HP-890CN is a versatile digital multimeter designed for measuring DC/AC voltage, DC/AC current, resistance, capacitance, frequency, temperature, and features a Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) detector. It is suitable for various electrical testing applications.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: To avoid electric shock or personal injury, and to prevent damage to the meter or the equipment under test, follow these safety guidelines:
- Always ensure the meter is in good working condition before use.
- Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as marked on the meter, between the terminals or between any terminal and earth ground.
- Use caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
- Before measuring current, ensure the meter's fuses are intact and the circuit is de-energized.
- Always disconnect the test leads from the circuit before changing functions.
- Do not use the meter if the battery cover is not properly closed.
- Replace the battery as soon as the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.
- Adhere to local and national safety codes.

4. Setup
4.1. Battery Installation
The HP-890CN is powered by batteries. Ensure fresh batteries are installed for optimal performance.
- Turn off the multimeter and disconnect all test leads.
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the meter.
- Use a screwdriver to open the battery cover.
- Insert the batteries, observing correct polarity (+ and -).
- Replace the battery cover and secure it with the screw.
4.2. Connecting Test Leads
Proper connection of test leads is crucial for accurate and safe measurements.
- Insert the black test lead into the "COM" (common) jack.
- For most voltage, resistance, capacitance, frequency, and temperature measurements, insert the red test lead into the "VΩHz" jack.
- For current measurements (mA/µA), insert the red test lead into the "mA/µA" jack.
- For high current measurements (up to 20A), insert the red test lead into the "20A" jack.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Power On/Off
Rotate the function switch from "OFF" to any desired measurement function to turn on the meter. Rotate it back to "OFF" to power off.
5.2. Measuring DC/AC Voltage
- Set the function switch to the "V" (Voltage) position. The meter will automatically detect AC or DC.
- Connect the test leads in parallel to the circuit or component being measured.
- Read the voltage value on the display.

Figure 5.1: An individual demonstrating voltage measurement using the multimeter by inserting the test probes into an electrical outlet. The display shows a reading of 225.6V AC.
5.3. Measuring DC/AC Current
WARNING: Never connect the test leads in parallel across a voltage source when measuring current. This will blow the fuse and may damage the meter.
- Set the function switch to the "A" (Current) position (or mA/µA depending on expected current).
- Open the circuit where current is to be measured.
- Connect the meter in series with the circuit.
- Read the current value on the display.
5.4. Measuring Resistance (Ω)
- Set the function switch to the "Ω" (Resistance) position.
- Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized before measuring resistance.
- Connect the test leads across the component.
- Read the resistance value on the display.
5.5. Measuring Capacitance (F)
- Set the function switch to the "F" (Capacitance) position.
- Discharge the capacitor completely before measurement to avoid damage to the meter.
- Connect the test leads across the capacitor terminals.
- Read the capacitance value on the display.
5.6. Measuring Temperature (°C/°F)
- Set the function switch to the "Temp" position.
- Connect the temperature probe to the appropriate input jacks (usually VΩHz and COM).
- Place the tip of the temperature probe on or near the object whose temperature is to be measured.
- Read the temperature value on the display.
5.7. Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection
- Set the function switch to the "NCV" position.
- Move the top end of the meter close to the conductor being tested.
- The meter will indicate the presence of AC voltage through an audible beep and/or LED indicator.
6. Maintenance
6.1. Cleaning
Wipe the meter with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents.
6.2. Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in Section 4.1.
6.3. Fuse Replacement
If the meter fails to measure current, the fuse may be blown. Replace it with a fuse of the specified type and rating (e.g., 20A/250V fast-blow for the 20A range, and 800mA/250V fast-blow for the mA/µA range). Refer to the markings on the meter for exact specifications.
- Turn off the meter and disconnect all test leads.
- Open the battery compartment cover.
- Carefully remove the old fuse.
- Install a new fuse of the correct type and rating.
- Replace the battery cover and secure it.
7. Troubleshooting
- No Display: Check battery installation and charge. Replace batteries if necessary.
- Incorrect Readings:
- Ensure correct function is selected.
- Verify test lead connections.
- Check for low battery.
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized for resistance/capacitance measurements.
- No Current Measurement: Check the current fuse. Replace if blown.
- NCV Not Detecting: Ensure the NCV function is selected and the meter is close enough to the AC voltage source.
