1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your SEBSON Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector, model CO_KD_218A. This device is designed to detect carbon monoxide gas and alert you to potentially dangerous levels, helping to protect your household from the silent killer. The detector is certified and tested according to the EN 50291 standard, ensuring reliable performance.
Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device and retain it for future reference. Proper understanding and adherence to these instructions are crucial for your safety.
2. Important Safety Information
- Carbon Monoxide (CO) Warning: CO is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be fatal. This detector is designed to alert you to the presence of CO, but it is not a substitute for proper maintenance of fuel-burning appliances.
- Do Not Paint: Never paint the CO detector. Paint can clog the sensor openings and prevent the alarm from functioning correctly.
- Regular Testing: Test the alarm weekly to ensure it is functioning properly. Refer to the 'Operating Instructions' section for details on how to perform a test.
- Alarm Response: If the alarm sounds, immediately move to fresh air, call emergency services, and do not re-enter the premises until it has been deemed safe by professionals.
- Battery Life: The detector is powered by 3 AA 1.5V DC batteries. Replace batteries promptly when a low battery warning is indicated.
- End of Life: The detector has a service life of approximately 10 years. After this period, the device should be replaced.
3. Product Overview
The SEBSON CO Detector features an LCD display, LED indicators, and a test button for easy monitoring and operation.

Figure 1: Front view of the SEBSON Carbon Monoxide Detector.
Components:
- LCD Display: Shows CO concentration in PPM, battery status, and error messages.
- LED Indicators:
- POWER (Green): Indicates normal operation.
- FAULT (Yellow): Indicates a device malfunction.
- ALARM (Red): Indicates CO detection.
- TEST Button: Used to test the alarm function and silence false alarms.
- Speaker: Emits the alarm sound.
4. Setup and Installation
4.1 Battery Installation
- Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the detector.
- Insert three (3) AA 1.5V DC batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely. The detector will perform a self-test upon initial power-on.
4.2 Choosing an Installation Location
Proper placement is critical for effective CO detection. Consider the following guidelines:
- General Placement: Install at least one CO detector on each level of your home, especially near sleeping areas and in rooms with fuel-burning appliances.
- Height: CO is slightly lighter than air and mixes well with it. Install the detector at a height between 1.5 meters (5 feet) and 2.5 meters (8 feet) from the floor.
- Distance from Appliances: If installing near a fuel-burning appliance, place the detector at least 1 meter (3 feet) away to avoid false alarms from initial combustion fumes.
- Avoidance: Do not install the detector in:
- Areas with high humidity (e.g., bathrooms, kitchens).
- Direct sunlight or near heat sources.
- Near ventilation openings, doors, or windows where air currents might dilute CO.
- In dusty, dirty, or greasy areas.
- Behind curtains or furniture that could obstruct the sensor.
4.3 Mounting the Detector
The detector can be mounted on a wall using the provided screws and wall plugs.

Figure 2: Back view with battery compartment and mounting points.

Figure 3: Detector dimensions.
- Mark the desired mounting location on the wall.
- Drill two holes at the marked positions, ensuring they align with the mounting slots on the back of the detector.
- Insert the wall plugs into the drilled holes.
- Screw the mounting screws into the wall plugs, leaving a small gap (approx. 3mm) between the screw head and the wall.
- Align the mounting slots on the back of the detector with the screw heads and slide the detector down to secure it.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Initial Power-On
After battery installation, the detector will perform a self-test. The LCD display will show a countdown, and all LEDs will flash briefly. A short beep will confirm successful initialization. The green POWER LED will then flash periodically, indicating normal operation.
5.2 LCD Display Indications
| Display | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 000 PPM | No CO detected or CO level below alarm threshold. |
| [CO concentration] PPM | Current CO concentration detected. |
| 'Err' | Fault detected in the device. Refer to Troubleshooting. |
| '---' | Test mode activated. |
| 'Hco' | High CO concentration detected (Danger). |
| Battery Icon | Indicates battery level. Flashing icon means low battery. |
5.3 LED Indicator Status
- Green POWER LED: Flashes every 30 seconds during normal operation.
- Yellow FAULT LED: Flashes when a fault is detected or battery is low.
- Red ALARM LED: Flashes rapidly during a CO alarm.
5.4 Test Button Function
Press and hold the 'TEST' button for approximately 3 seconds. The alarm will sound, and the red ALARM LED will flash, indicating that the alarm function is working correctly. The LCD will display '---'. Release the button to return to normal operation.
5.5 Alarm Conditions and Mute Function
The detector will sound an alarm and flash the red ALARM LED when CO levels reach dangerous thresholds according to EN 50291. The LCD will display the CO concentration and 'Hco'.
If the alarm sounds due to a known, temporary source of CO (e.g., brief fumes from a gas stove), you can press the 'TEST' button to activate the mute function. The alarm will be silenced for approximately 10 minutes. If CO levels remain high after 10 minutes, the alarm will reactivate. Do not use the mute function if you suspect a serious CO leak.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Regular Testing
Test your CO detector weekly by pressing the 'TEST' button. This ensures the electronic circuitry, alarm, and battery are functioning correctly.
6.2 Cleaning
Clean the exterior of the detector regularly with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use cleaning agents, solvents, or polish, as these can damage the sensor or casing. Do not spray air fresheners, hairspray, or other aerosols near the detector.
6.3 Battery Replacement
When the battery icon on the LCD display flashes and the yellow FAULT LED flashes, it indicates low battery. Replace all three AA 1.5V DC batteries immediately. Refer to section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.
6.4 End of Life
The SEBSON CO Detector has a lifespan of 10 years. After this period, the detector will indicate its end-of-life and must be replaced to ensure continued protection.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm sounds, red ALARM LED flashes, 'Hco' on LCD. | High CO concentration detected. | Evacuate the area immediately. Call emergency services. Do not re-enter until safe. |
| Yellow FAULT LED flashes, battery icon flashes. | Low battery. | Replace all three AA 1.5V DC batteries. |
| Yellow FAULT LED flashes, 'Err' on LCD. | Internal fault or sensor malfunction. | Perform a test. If the error persists, the unit may be defective and needs replacement. |
| Alarm sounds frequently without apparent CO source. | False alarm due to incorrect placement or environmental factors. | Review installation location (Section 4.2). Ensure no strong fumes or high humidity are affecting the sensor. Clean the detector. |
| No display or power. | No batteries, incorrect battery installation, or dead batteries. | Check battery installation and polarity. Replace batteries with new ones. |
