5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Selecting Stitches

Your Singer Serenade M320L offers 23 built-in stitches, including 10 decorative stitches and a 4-step buttonhole.

  • Turn the Stitch Selector Dial to choose the desired stitch pattern. Refer to the stitch chart on the machine for available options.
  • Adjust the Stitch Length Dial to set the desired stitch length. For most utility stitches, a length between 2.0 and 3.0 is common.
  • Adjust the Stitch Width Dial (if applicable for selected stitch) to set the desired stitch width.

5.2 Adjusting Thread Tension

Proper thread tension is crucial for balanced stitches.

  • A balanced stitch will have the upper and bobbin threads meeting evenly between the two layers of fabric.
  • If the upper thread lies flat on the fabric and the bobbin thread shows on the top, the upper tension is too tight. Decrease the upper tension by turning the tension dial to a lower number.
  • If the bobbin thread lies flat on the fabric and the upper thread shows on the bottom, the upper tension is too loose. Increase the upper tension by turning the tension dial to a higher number.

5.3 Basic Sewing

  1. Place the fabric under the presser foot, aligning the edge with a seam guide on the needle plate.
  2. Lower the presser foot lever.
  3. Turn the handwheel towards you to lower the needle into the fabric at the starting point.
  4. Press the foot controller gently to begin sewing. Increase pressure for faster sewing.
  5. To secure the beginning and end of a seam, press and hold the reverse lever to sew a few stitches in reverse, then release and continue sewing forward.
  6. When finished, raise the needle to its highest position, raise the presser foot, and pull the fabric away from the machine.
  7. Cut the threads using the thread cutter on the machine or scissors.

5.4 4-Step Buttonhole

The M320L features a simple 4-step buttonhole function.

  1. Attach the buttonhole foot.
  2. Mark the buttonhole position on your fabric.
  3. Set the stitch selector to the first buttonhole step (usually indicated by a symbol).
  4. Sew the first side of the buttonhole.
  5. Change the stitch selector to the second step and sew the bar tack.
  6. Change to the third step and sew the second side.
  7. Finally, change to the fourth step and sew the final bar tack.
  8. Carefully cut open the buttonhole using a seam ripper, being careful not to cut the stitches.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your sewing machine. Always unplug the machine before performing any maintenance.

6.1 Cleaning

  • Lint and Dust Removal: Regularly remove the needle plate and bobbin case to clean out lint and dust accumulation with a small brush or vacuum cleaner.
  • Exterior Cleaning: Wipe the exterior surfaces of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

6.2 Needle Replacement

Replace the needle frequently, especially after every 8-10 hours of sewing or if it becomes bent, dull, or burred.

  1. Turn off the machine and unplug it.
  2. Loosen the needle clamp screw.
  3. Remove the old needle.
  4. Insert a new needle with the flat side facing the back of the machine, pushing it up as far as it will go.
  5. Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.
