Kidde Hardwired Smoke Detector i12010S User Manual

Model: i12010S

1. Introduction and Overview

The Kidde Hardwired Smoke Detector, model i12010S, is designed to provide early warning of fire. This device utilizes ionization sensor technology, which is effective at detecting invisible fire particles often associated with fast-flaming fires. It operates on a 120-volt AC power source and includes a sealed 10-year lithium battery backup, ensuring continuous protection even during power outages. When smoke is detected, an 85-decibel alarm will sound, accompanied by visual indicators. This manual provides essential information for proper installation, operation, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and safety.

2. Important Safety Information

Read all instructions before installation and operation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in property damage, injury, or death. This smoke alarm is designed for residential use only. It is not intended for use in non-residential buildings or for special applications. Do not paint the alarm. Paint can clog the openings and interfere with the sensor's ability to detect smoke.

2.1 Placement Guidelines

For optimal protection, install smoke detectors on every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area. Ensure alarms are not placed within 6 feet of heating or cooking appliances, or in areas with high humidity like bathrooms, as this can lead to nuisance alarms. Refer to local codes and NFPA 72 for specific requirements.

3. Setup and Installation

The Kidde i12010S smoke detector is hardwired and requires a 120V AC power supply. It is designed for easy installation, especially when replacing older hardwired units. Always ensure power is turned off at the circuit breaker before beginning installation.

3.1 Wiring Instructions

Connect the smoke detector to a continuous 120V AC, 60Hz household electrical circuit. Use the provided wiring harness. The black wire is for hot (L), the white wire for neutral (N), and the red wire for interconnect (if applicable). Ensure all connections are secure and comply with local electrical codes.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures your smoke detector remains operational and effective.

5.1 Weekly Testing

Test your smoke alarm weekly by pressing and holding the Test/Hush button until the alarm sounds. This verifies the electronic circuitry, horn, and battery are working correctly.

5.2 Cleaning

Clean your alarm at least once a month. Use a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove dust and debris from the openings around the perimeter of the alarm. Do not use cleaning solvents or spray directly on the unit.

5.3 End-of-Life Indication

The smoke detector has a 10-year operational life. At the end of its life, the unit will begin to chirp two times every 30 seconds. This indicates that the alarm needs to be replaced immediately. The alarm will not detect smoke in this condition. To silence the end-of-life chirps for up to 3 days, press the Test/Hush button. This feature is temporary and the unit must be replaced.

6. Troubleshooting

If your smoke detector is not functioning as expected, refer to the following common issues and solutions.

6.1 Nuisance Alarms

If the alarm sounds due to cooking smoke, steam, or other non-emergency conditions, press the Test/Hush button to temporarily silence it. Ensure the alarm is not placed too close to kitchens, bathrooms, or other sources of steam/smoke. Regular cleaning can also prevent false alarms caused by dust buildup.

6.2 Chirping Sounds

Refer to the "LED Indicators and Alarm Signals" table in Section 4.2 for a detailed explanation of chirping patterns. Most chirps indicate a low battery, a dirty sensor, or that the unit has reached its end-of-life and requires replacement.

6.3 Alarm Not Sounding During Test

If the alarm does not sound when the Test/Hush button is pressed, ensure the unit is receiving 120V AC power and the battery is activated. If the issue persists, the unit may be faulty and requires replacement.
