Owigift Oven Range Burner Igniter Instruction Manual

For GE Gas Ranges (Various Models)

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the Owigift Oven Range Burner Igniter, a replacement component designed for various GE Gas Range models. It is intended to assist users in understanding the product, its function, and general installation guidelines. Please read all instructions carefully before attempting any installation or maintenance.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service, or maintenance can cause property damage, injury, or death. Read the installation, operating, and maintenance instructions thoroughly before installing or servicing this equipment.

  • Disconnect Power and Gas: Always ensure that the electrical power and gas supply to the range are completely disconnected before attempting any service or installation. Failure to do so can result in electric shock, gas leaks, fire, or explosion.
  • Professional Installation Recommended: If you are not experienced with appliance repair, it is highly recommended to seek assistance from a qualified service technician.
  • Wear Protective Gear: Use appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves and safety glasses, during installation.
  • Check for Leaks: After reconnecting the gas supply, always check for gas leaks using a soap and water solution. Never use an open flame.
  • Handle with Care: Igniters are fragile. Handle the new igniter carefully to avoid damage.

3. Product Components

The Owigift Oven Range Burner Igniter consists of a silicon carbide heating element encased in a protective metal housing, with electrical leads for connection. It is designed to heat up rapidly to ignite the gas in your oven's burner.

4. Setup and Installation

This section provides general steps for replacing an oven igniter. Specific procedures may vary depending on your GE Gas Range model. Always refer to your appliance's service manual for detailed, model-specific instructions.

  1. Preparation: Ensure the range is completely cool. Disconnect the electrical power cord from the wall outlet and turn off the gas supply valve to the range.
  2. Access the Igniter: Depending on your model, you may need to remove the oven door, oven racks, bottom oven panel, and/or burner assembly to access the igniter. Typically, the igniter is located near the gas burner tube.
  3. Disconnect Old Igniter: Carefully disconnect the electrical wires leading to the old igniter. Note the routing of the wires for reinstallation. Unscrew the mounting screws that secure the old igniter to the burner assembly or oven floor.
  4. Remove Old Igniter: Gently remove the old igniter. Be aware that igniters can be fragile.
  5. Install New Igniter: Position the new Owigift igniter in the same location as the old one. Secure it with the mounting screws. Ensure it is firmly in place but do not overtighten.
  6. Connect Wiring: Connect the electrical wires of the new igniter to the range's wiring harness. Ensure connections are secure and properly insulated if necessary.
  7. Reassemble: Reinstall any removed panels, burner assemblies, racks, and the oven door in reverse order of removal.
  8. Restore Power and Gas: Turn on the gas supply valve and reconnect the electrical power to the range.
  9. Test Operation: Test the oven to ensure the igniter glows and ignites the gas burner properly. Check for any gas leaks around connections using a soap and water solution.

5. Function and Operation

The oven igniter is a critical component in a gas oven's ignition system. When the oven is set to bake or broil, an electrical current is sent to the igniter. The igniter heats up to a very high temperature, becoming incandescent. This heat then opens the gas valve, allowing gas to flow to the burner. The hot igniter simultaneously ignites the gas, creating the flame necessary for heating the oven. A properly functioning igniter will glow brightly and ignite the gas within a few seconds.

6. Maintenance

The Owigift Oven Range Burner Igniter is designed for durability. Regular maintenance is generally not required for the igniter itself. However, ensuring the oven cavity and burner area are kept clean can help prolong the life of all components, including the igniter. Avoid spilling liquids or food debris directly onto the igniter.

7. Troubleshooting

If your oven is not heating or experiencing ignition issues, the igniter may be a contributing factor. Here are common symptoms and potential solutions:

  • Oven Not Heating: If the igniter does not glow at all, or glows very dimly, it may be faulty and require replacement.
  • Slow Ignition: If the igniter glows but takes a long time (more than 60-90 seconds) to ignite the gas, it may be weak and not drawing enough current to open the gas valve quickly. This also indicates a need for replacement.
  • Gas Smell Without Ignition: If you smell gas but the burner does not ignite, turn off the oven immediately and ventilate the area. This could indicate a faulty igniter not igniting the gas, or a problem with the gas valve. Do not attempt to operate the oven until the issue is resolved by a qualified technician.

For any complex issues or if you are unsure about diagnosing the problem, consult a qualified appliance repair technician.
