Scheppach CSH56 Thermal Chainsaw User Manual

Model: CSH56 | Brand: Scheppach

1. Important Safety Instructions

Always prioritize safety when operating the chainsaw. Failure to follow these instructions can result in serious injury or death.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear a safety helmet, hearing protection, eye protection, heavy-duty gloves, safety trousers (cut-resistant), and safety boots with non-slip soles.
  • Work Area: Ensure the work area is clear of bystanders, children, and pets. Maintain a safe distance from other people and objects.
  • Fuel Handling: Mix and store fuel in a well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources. Do not refuel while the engine is running or hot.
  • Inspection: Before each use, inspect the chainsaw for damaged parts, loose fasteners, and proper chain tension. Ensure the chain brake is functional.
  • Kickback Prevention: Be aware of kickback risks. Avoid cutting with the tip of the guide bar. Maintain a firm grip with both hands.
  • Weather Conditions: Do not operate the chainsaw in adverse weather conditions such as strong winds, rain, or snow.
  • First Aid: Keep a first aid kit readily available.

2. Product Overview

The Scheppach CSH56 is a powerful thermal chainsaw designed for felling, limbing, and bucking wood. Familiarize yourself with its components before operation.

Key Components:

  • Engine Housing: Contains the 56cm³ 2-stroke engine.
  • Guide Bar: Procut 51cm guide bar for precise cutting.
  • Saw Chain: High-performance cutting chain.
  • Chain Brake: Integrated safety feature to stop the chain instantly.
  • Front Handle: For stable two-hand operation.
  • Rear Handle: With throttle trigger and safety lock.
  • Fuel Tank: For gasoline-oil mixture.
  • Oil Tank: For chain lubrication oil.
  • Starter Rope: For manual engine start.
  • Anti-Vibration System: Reduces operator fatigue.

3. Setup and Assembly

Before operating the chainsaw, proper assembly and preparation are essential.

3.1. Guide Bar and Chain Installation

  1. Ensure the engine is off and the chain brake is engaged.
  2. Remove the chain cover by loosening the two nuts.
  3. Place the chain around the sprocket and guide bar, ensuring the cutting edges face forward on the top side of the bar.
  4. Mount the guide bar onto the studs, aligning the chain tensioner pin with the hole in the guide bar.
  5. Replace the chain cover and hand-tighten the nuts. Do not fully tighten yet.

3.2. Chain Tension Adjustment

  1. Using the tensioning screw, adjust the chain tension. The chain should be snug against the guide bar, but still able to be pulled freely by hand.
  2. Lift the tip of the guide bar slightly while tightening the chain cover nuts securely.
  3. Re-check chain tension. A properly tensioned chain will not sag on the underside of the guide bar and can be pulled around the bar without excessive force.

3.3. Fuel and Chain Oil Filling

  • Fuel: The CSH56 uses a 2-stroke engine. Mix unleaded gasoline with high-quality 2-stroke engine oil at the ratio specified in the engine manual (typically 25:1 or 50:1, refer to specific engine instructions). Fill the fuel tank carefully.
  • Chain Oil: Fill the chain oil tank with biodegradable chain lubricant. The automatic lubrication system requires a constant supply of oil.

4. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for safe and effective operation of your Scheppach CSH56 chainsaw.

4.1. Starting the Engine

  1. Place the chainsaw on a firm, flat surface. Ensure the chain brake is engaged.
  2. Set the ON/OFF switch to the "ON" position.
  3. Engage the choke (if cold start).
  4. Press the primer bulb several times until fuel is visible.
  5. Pull the starter rope firmly and steadily until the engine fires (usually a few pulls).
  6. Disengage the choke (if engaged) and pull the starter rope again until the engine runs smoothly.
  7. Allow the engine to warm up for a few moments before disengaging the chain brake and beginning work.

4.2. Cutting Techniques

Always maintain a balanced stance and a firm grip on both handles. Let the chain do the work; do not force the saw.

  • Felling: Plan your felling direction. Make a directional notch on the side of the fall, then a felling cut from the opposite side, slightly above the notch.
  • Limbing: Work from the bottom up, supporting the branch if necessary to prevent pinching.
  • Bucking: Cut logs into desired lengths. Be mindful of tension in the wood to avoid pinching the guide bar.

4.3. Stopping the Engine

  1. Release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to idle.
  2. Engage the chain brake.
  3. Move the ON/OFF switch to the "OFF" position.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your chainsaw.

  • Chain Sharpening: A sharp chain is crucial for efficient and safe cutting. Sharpen the chain regularly according to the manufacturer's specifications for file size and angle.
  • Guide Bar Maintenance: Clean the guide bar groove and oil holes. Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
  • Air Filter: Clean the air filter after every 5-10 hours of operation, or more frequently in dusty conditions. Replace if damaged.
  • Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug periodically. Replace if worn or fouled.
  • Automatic Lubrication System: Ensure the oil tank is always filled with chain oil. Check the oil output regularly.
  • General Cleaning: Keep the chainsaw clean from sawdust, debris, and oil residue.
