5. Installation and Setup

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your amplifier. If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a professional car audio installer.

5.1 Mounting Location

Choose a mounting location that is:

  • Secure and stable, preventing vibration.
  • Well-ventilated to allow for heat dissipation.
  • Protected from moisture and direct sunlight.
  • Accessible for wiring and adjustments.

Avoid mounting the amplifier directly on carpet or in enclosed spaces without airflow.

5.2 Wiring Connections

Refer to the image below for a visual guide to the power input and speaker output terminals.

Figure 2: Detailed view of the EDISON ED-6044 amplifier's power input (GND, REM, +12V) and speaker output terminals (CH3, CH4, Bridge) along with the fuse slot.

Power Input (POWER INPUT)

  • GND (Ground): Connect this terminal directly to the vehicle's chassis using the shortest possible heavy-gauge wire. Ensure a clean, bare metal connection.
  • REM (Remote Turn-On): Connect this terminal to the remote output wire from your head unit. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with your car's stereo.
  • +12V (Power): Connect this terminal directly to the positive terminal of your vehicle's battery. An in-line fuse holder with an appropriate fuse (matching the amplifier's rating) must be installed within 18 inches (45 cm) of the battery.

Important: Use heavy-gauge power and ground wires to prevent voltage drops and ensure stable operation. The fuse slot on the amplifier itself provides additional protection.

Speaker Outputs (SPEAKER)

The ED-6044 features 4 channels. You can connect speakers in stereo or bridge channels for higher power output to subwoofers.

  • CH3 / CH4: Connect your speakers to these terminals. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).
  • BRIDGE: For higher power output, channels can be bridged. For example, to bridge CH3 and CH4, connect the positive (+) terminal of your speaker/subwoofer to the CH3 (+) terminal and the negative (-) terminal of your speaker/subwoofer to the CH4 (-) terminal. Refer to the amplifier's specifications for minimum impedance in bridged mode.

Ensure that the total impedance of the speakers connected to each channel or bridged pair is within the amplifier's specified operating range to prevent damage.

Audio Input (RCA)

Connect the RCA output cables from your head unit to the corresponding RCA input jacks on the amplifier. Ensure left and right channels are correctly matched.

Gain and Crossover Settings

Adjust the gain control to match the output voltage of your head unit. Start with the gain at minimum and slowly increase it until you hear distortion, then back off slightly. Use the crossover settings (if available on the amplifier or head unit) to filter frequencies for your speakers and subwoofers, optimizing sound quality and protecting your speakers.

6. Operating Instructions

Once installed, operating your EDISON ED-6044 amplifier is straightforward:

  1. Turn on the Head Unit: The amplifier will automatically turn on when your car's head unit is powered on, thanks to the remote turn-on wire.
  2. Adjust Volume: Start with the head unit's volume low and gradually increase it to your desired listening level.
  3. Fine-tune Settings: Adjust gain, crossover, and bass boost settings (if applicable) on the amplifier and head unit to achieve the best sound quality for your system and personal preference.
  4. Listen for Distortion: If you hear any distortion, reduce the volume or re-adjust the gain settings. Prolonged listening to distorted audio can damage your speakers and amplifier.

7. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your EDISON ED-6044 amplifier, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Keep Clean: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and dirt. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Ensure Ventilation: Regularly check that the amplifier's cooling fins are free from obstructions to allow for proper heat dissipation.
  • Check Connections: Occasionally inspect all wiring connections (power, ground, remote, speaker, RCA) to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion. Loose connections can lead to poor performance or damage.
  • Fuse Replacement: If the amplifier's fuse blows, replace it only with a fuse of the exact same type and rating. Using an incorrect fuse can cause serious damage to the amplifier or vehicle's electrical system.

8. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your EDISON ED-6044 amplifier, consult the following troubleshooting guide before contacting support:

8.1 No Power / Amplifier Does Not Turn On

  • Check Power Wire (+12V): Ensure the power wire is securely connected to the battery and the amplifier, and that the in-line fuse near the battery is intact.
  • Check Ground Wire (GND): Verify the ground wire is securely connected to a clean, bare metal point on the vehicle chassis and to the amplifier.
  • Check Remote Wire (REM): Confirm the remote wire is connected to the head unit's remote output and to the amplifier. Ensure the head unit is turned on.
  • Check Amplifier Fuse: Inspect the fuse on the amplifier itself. Replace if blown, using the correct rating.

8.2 No Sound Output

  • Check RCA Input Cables: Ensure RCA cables are securely connected to both the head unit and the amplifier.
  • Check Speaker Wires: Verify all speaker wires are correctly connected to the amplifier and speakers, with no shorts or loose connections.
  • Check Head Unit: Ensure the head unit is powered on, playing audio, and its volume is turned up.
  • Adjust Gain: Ensure the amplifier's gain control is not set to minimum.

8.3 Distorted Sound

  • Adjust Gain: The gain may be set too high. Reduce the amplifier's gain control.
  • Check Speaker Impedance: Ensure the speakers' impedance matches the amplifier's recommended load.
  • Check Wiring: Inspect speaker wires for shorts or frayed strands touching the chassis.
  • Power Supply: Ensure adequate power supply. Voltage drops can cause distortion.

8.4 Amplifier Overheats

  • Check Ventilation: Ensure the amplifier is mounted in a well-ventilated area and its cooling fins are not obstructed.
  • Check Speaker Impedance: Running the amplifier below its minimum recommended impedance can cause overheating.
  • Reduce Gain: High gain settings can cause the amplifier to work harder and generate more heat.
