Its non-metallic cable clamps and 14.0 cubic inch capacity make it suitable for a range of residential electrical applications.

Safety Information

WARNING: Risk of electric shock. Always turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before installing, servicing, or removing this product. All electrical work should be performed by a qualified electrician or in accordance with local electrical codes.

  • Ensure all wiring connections are secure and properly insulated.
  • Do not exceed the maximum fill capacity of the box (14.0 cu. in.).
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with electricity.
  • Verify that the box is securely mounted before installing devices or covering.

Setup and Installation

The HomeCare 8355 switch box is designed for quick and secure installation on wooden studs.

Mounting the Box

  1. Prepare the Location: Identify the desired location on a wooden stud. Ensure there is sufficient space for the box and any associated wiring.
  2. Position the Box: Place the box against the wooden stud. The integrated nails are designed to penetrate the stud for initial positioning.
  3. Secure Mounting: Drive the integrated nails fully into the wooden stud until the box is flush and securely fastened. The gauging notches at 3/8 in., 1/2 in., and 5/8 in. can assist in aligning the box depth with the wall surface.
  4. Utilize s-bracket: For extended sides, the s-bracket can be used to provide additional support and stability.

Wiring Connections

  1. Select Knockouts: The box features 4 side pri-outs for NM cable, 2 side knockouts (1/2 in.), and 1 back knockout (1/2 in.). Choose the appropriate knockout(s) for your wiring entry points.
  2. Remove Knockouts: Carefully remove the selected knockouts using appropriate tools.
  3. Insert Cables: Feed the electrical cables through the chosen knockouts. The non-metallic cable clamps will secure the cables as they enter the box.
  4. Make Connections: Inside the box, make all necessary electrical connections for your switch, outlet, or other device according to local electrical codes and the device manufacturer's instructions. Ensure proper grounding.
  5. Verify Capacity: Do not overfill the box. The maximum capacity is 14.0 cubic inches.

Operating Principles

The HomeCare 8355 Instant On Switch Box is a passive component within an electrical system. Its "operation" is defined by its role in safely containing electrical connections and devices. Once properly installed and wired, it provides a secure enclosure for switches, outlets, or other electrical components, protecting them from external damage and preventing accidental contact with live wires.

The box itself does not have active operational controls. Its function is to maintain the integrity and safety of the electrical circuit it houses. Proper installation ensures the long-term reliability and safety of the electrical system.

Maintenance

The HomeCare 8355 Instant On Switch Box requires minimal maintenance once installed. However, periodic inspection of your electrical system is recommended to ensure continued safety and performance.

  • Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the area around the electrical box for any signs of damage, loose connections, or wear.
  • Secureness: Ensure the box remains securely mounted to the stud.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the area around the box free from dust, debris, or moisture.
  • Professional Check: If you suspect any electrical issues or notice unusual smells, sounds, or flickering lights, consult a qualified electrician immediately. Do not attempt to repair electrical issues yourself unless you are qualified.

Troubleshooting

As a passive electrical enclosure, the HomeCare 8355 switch box itself is unlikely to be the direct cause of electrical malfunctions. Most issues related to an electrical box stem from improper installation or wiring within the box.

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • No Power to Device (Switch/Outlet):
    • Check Circuit Breaker: Ensure the circuit breaker for the affected circuit is in the "ON" position and has not tripped.
    • Inspect Wiring: (WARNING: Turn off power first!) Carefully inspect all wiring connections inside the box. Look for loose wires, incorrect connections, or damaged insulation. Re-secure or correct as needed.
    • Test Device: The issue might be with the switch or outlet itself. Test the device or replace it if necessary.
  • Loose Box:
    • Re-secure Mounting: (WARNING: Turn off power first!) If the box feels loose, ensure the integrated nails are fully driven into the stud. If necessary, use additional appropriate fasteners to secure the box.
  • Overheating/Burning Smell:
    • IMMEDIATELY Turn Off Power: This indicates a serious electrical issue. Turn off the circuit breaker for the affected circuit immediately.
    • Call a Professional: Do not attempt to diagnose or fix this yourself. Contact a qualified electrician immediately.

For any electrical issues beyond basic troubleshooting, it is strongly recommended to consult a licensed electrician.
