  1. Antenna Connection: Connect your over-the-air antenna to the coaxial input port. Ensure the antenna is positioned for optimal signal reception.
  2. USB Hard Drive: (Optional for DVR) Connect a USB hard drive (up to 2TB) to the USB port for recording live TV.
  3. Ethernet Connection: Connect the provided network cable from the Ethernet port on the HDHomeRun device to an available LAN port on your router or network switch.
  4. Power: Connect the power adapter to the power input port and then plug it into an electrical outlet.

2. Antenna Placement and Optimization

Proper antenna placement is crucial for receiving the maximum number of channels with clear reception. Consider the following:

  • Locate Broadcast Towers: Use online resources (e.g., Channel Master, RabbitEars.info) to identify the direction and distance of local broadcast towers.
  • Window Placement: Position your antenna in a window that faces the direction of the broadcast towers. Walls can severely restrict reception. Clear glass is preferable; screens may reduce signal strength.
  • Amplified Antennas: If using an amplified antenna, it is generally recommended to connect it directly to the HDHomeRun without using the amplifier, as amplifiers can sometimes interfere with the tuner's reception.

3. Software Installation

Once the hardware is connected, download and install the HDHomeRun application on your desired viewing devices. The app is compatible with Android, FireTV, AppleTV, Roku, Sony, XBox, iPhone, iPad, Windows 10/11, and Mac.

Operating Instructions

1. Using the HDHomeRun App

The HDHomeRun app provides the interface for watching live TV and managing recordings. No account is required for basic live TV viewing.

  • Live Screen: Upon launching, the app typically defaults to the Live Screen, displaying the last viewed channel.
  • Channel Navigation: Use the up/down arrows on your remote or device to browse channels. A Live TV slice guide will appear, showing current programming and upcoming shows.
  • Discover Page: Access the Discover page for a full-screen program guide, allowing you to browse shows, movies, sports, and news. From here, you can select programs to watch or set for recording.
  • Recording: If a USB hard drive is connected, you can record live TV. A paid TV guide subscription may be required for full DVR functionality, including scheduling and managing recordings.
  • Settings: Access settings to manage devices, channels, parental controls, and other preferences.

  • Cleaning: Keep the device clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners or abrasive materials.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the device is placed in a well-ventilated area to prevent overheating. Do not block ventilation openings.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions

  • Not receiving any channels:
    • Verify antenna connection and placement.
    • Ensure the HDHomeRun device is powered on and connected to your network.
    • Run a channel scan within the HDHomeRun app.
    • Check for obstructions between your antenna and broadcast towers.
  • Not reliably receiving all expected channels:
    • Adjust antenna position slightly.
    • Consider a different antenna type or an outdoor antenna for better reception, especially if towers are far.
    • Ensure no amplifier is interfering with the signal if your antenna has one.
  • Picture quality issues (pixelation, freezing):
    • Signal strength may be weak. Re-evaluate antenna placement.
    • Check network connection stability. A strong, stable network connection is essential for streaming.
    • Ensure your viewing device meets the minimum system requirements for the HDHomeRun app.
  • DVR recording issues:
    • Verify the USB hard drive is properly connected and formatted.
    • Ensure you have an active paid TV guide subscription for full DVR functionality.
    • Check available storage space on the connected hard drive.

Antenna Selection Guide

The following guidelines can assist in selecting and positioning your antenna for optimal performance:

Antenna Selection Guide with distance recommendations

Image: Antenna selection guide providing recommendations based on distance from broadcast towers.

  • 65+ miles: Requires a high-gain outdoor antenna mounted on a mast or roof. Professional installation may be recommended.
  • 55-65 miles: A large outdoor antenna mounted on the roof is typically needed.
  • 45-55 miles: A mid-size outdoor antenna mounted on the roof or a large indoor antenna mounted in the attic may suffice.
  • 30-45 miles: A compact outdoor antenna or a mid-sized indoor antenna in the attic is often suitable.
  • 0-30 miles: A well-designed indoor antenna will generally work. Ensure it has VHF support if needed, as some channels broadcast on VHF frequencies.
  • Note: Avoid antennas advertised with unrealistic ranges (e.g., 250, 500, 1000 miles) as these claims are often misleading.
