5. Installation (Setup)

Follow these steps for proper installation of your storm door closer. This closer is suitable for wood, metal, or vinyl doors. For heavier full-view storm doors, using two closers (one at the top and one at the bottom) is recommended for balanced operation.

  1. Determine Mounting Location: The closer can be mounted at the top, middle, or bottom of the door, depending on your door's design and existing hardware. Ensure the closer will not interfere with other door components or operation.
  2. Attach Door Bracket: Position the door bracket on the door frame. Mark and pre-drill pilot holes. Secure the door bracket using the provided screws.
  3. Attach Closer to Door Bracket: Connect the piston end of the closer to the door bracket using the pin.
  4. Position Frame Bracket: Extend the closer arm to the door frame. Ensure the door can open a full 90 degrees without straining the closer. Mark the position for the frame bracket.
  5. Attach Frame Bracket: Mark and pre-drill pilot holes for the frame bracket. Secure the frame bracket to the door frame using the provided screws.
  6. Connect Closer to Frame Bracket: Connect the rod end of the closer to the frame bracket using the pin.
  7. Test Operation: Slowly open and close the door to ensure smooth operation and proper latching. Adjust as needed.

6. Operation and Adjustment

Your LARSON Storm Door Closer features adjustable closing speed and a hold-open function.

6.1. Adjusting Closing Speed

The closing speed is controlled by a screw located at the end of the closer piston. Turning this screw adjusts the hydraulic fluid flow, thereby changing the door's closing speed.

  • Turn the screw clockwise to decrease the closing speed (door closes slower).
  • Turn the screw counter-clockwise to increase the closing speed (door closes faster).

Adjust gradually and test the door's closing action after each adjustment until the desired speed is achieved. The door should close smoothly and latch securely without slamming.

6.2. Using the Hold-Open Feature

To keep the door open, slide the provided hold-open washer onto the closer rod when the door is open at the desired position. The washer will hold the rod in place, preventing the door from closing. To release, simply push the door slightly open, and the washer will disengage, allowing the door to close.

7. Maintenance

  • The closer is factory lubricated for life and requires no additional lubrication.
  • Periodically check all mounting screws for tightness. Retighten if necessary to ensure secure attachment.
  • Inspect the closer and brackets for any signs of wear or damage. Replace the closer if it becomes bent or damaged.
  • Keep the closer clean from dirt and debris to ensure smooth operation.
