Setup

  1. Locate the OBDII Port: The OBDII port is usually located under the dashboard on the driver's side of the vehicle. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual if you cannot find it.
  2. Connect the Scanner: With the vehicle's ignition off, firmly plug the OBDII connector cable from the KW850 scanner into the vehicle's OBDII port.

Navigating the Menu

Use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons to scroll through menu options. Press the OK button to confirm a selection. Use the ESC button to return to the previous screen or exit a function.

1. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

  1. From the Main Menu, select "Diagnose" and press OK.
  2. The scanner will establish communication with the vehicle's ECU.
  3. Select "Read Codes" from the diagnostic menu.
  4. The screen will display any stored DTCs (Pending, Permanent, or Confirmed). Each code will have a brief description.
  5. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to view all codes.

2. Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

Caution: Clearing DTCs will erase all diagnostic data from the vehicle's ECU, including freeze frame data and manufacturer-specific enhanced data. Ensure you have recorded all necessary information before clearing codes. Clearing codes does not fix the underlying problem.

  1. After reading codes, select "Erase Codes" from the diagnostic menu.
  2. Confirm your selection when prompted.
  3. The scanner will attempt to clear the codes. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) should turn off if the fault is no longer present.

3. Viewing Live Data Stream

  1. From the "Diagnose" menu, select "Live Data".
  2. You can view various sensor readings and parameters in real-time. Options may include "View All Items," "Custom Data List," or "Graph Data."
  3. Use the UP/DOWN buttons to scroll and OK to select.

4. I/M Readiness Status

This function checks the readiness of the emission-related monitoring systems on the vehicle. It indicates if the vehicle's monitors have completed their diagnostic testing.

  1. From the "Diagnose" menu, select "I/M Readiness".
  2. The screen will display the status of various monitors (e.g., O2 Sensor Monitor, Catalyst Monitor). "OK" or "Complete" indicates the monitor has run, "INC" or "Incomplete" means it has not.

5. Battery Voltage Check

  1. From the Main Menu, select "BAT Check" and press OK.
  2. The scanner will display the current voltage of the vehicle's battery.
