1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, setup, and maintenance of your Scheppach DM500T Wood Lathe. Please read these instructions thoroughly before initial use and keep them for future reference. Understanding and following these guidelines will ensure optimal performance and extend the lifespan of your machine.
2. Safety Instructions
WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions may result in serious injury or damage to the machine.
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and a dust mask.
- Ensure the work area is clean, well-lit, and free from obstructions.
- Keep children and unauthorized persons away from the machine during operation.
- Securely mount the lathe to a stable workbench to prevent movement and vibration.
- Before starting, ensure the workpiece is properly secured between centers or on the faceplate.
- Never wear loose clothing, gloves, or jewelry that could become entangled in rotating parts. Tie back long hair.
- Do not operate the lathe if you are tired, under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.
- Disconnect the power supply before making adjustments, changing accessories, or performing maintenance.
- Use only sharp, appropriate turning tools. Dull tools can cause kickback or poor results.
- Never attempt to stop the rotating workpiece by hand.
- Regularly inspect the power cord for damage.
3. Package Contents

4. Setup
The Scheppach DM500T Wood Lathe is designed for ease of setup. While some assembly may be required for the tool rest and tailstock, the main unit is largely pre-assembled.
4.1 Workbench Mounting
For safe and vibration-free operation, the lathe must be securely bolted to a sturdy workbench. Use appropriate fasteners (not included) through the mounting holes provided in the base of the lathe.

4.2 Tool Rest Assembly
- Insert the tool rest post into the base.
- Adjust the height and position of the tool rest to suit your workpiece and turning operation.
- Securely tighten all locking levers before operation.
4.3 Tailstock Adjustment
The tailstock can be moved along the bed to accommodate different workpiece lengths. Ensure it is locked firmly in place before turning.
5. Operating Instructions
Familiarize yourself with the controls and functions before beginning any turning project.
5.1 Power and Speed Control
The lathe features a 400W induction motor with 4 speed levels. Speed changes are typically performed by adjusting the drive belt position on the pulleys (refer to the machine's internal diagram for specific instructions).
- Available No-Load Rotation Speeds: 890 / 1260 / 1760 / 2600 min-1
- Always select the appropriate speed for the workpiece size and material. Lower speeds are generally used for larger diameters and roughing cuts, while higher speeds are for smaller diameters and finishing.
- The main power switch (ON/OFF) is located on the headstock.
5.2 Mounting a Workpiece (Spindle Turning)
- Prepare your workpiece by cutting it to the desired length and marking the centers.
- Mount the drive center into the headstock spindle.
- Press the workpiece onto the drive center, ensuring the teeth bite firmly into the wood.
- Slide the tailstock towards the workpiece and engage the live center with the marked center of the workpiece.
- Tighten the tailstock quill to apply firm pressure, then lock the tailstock to the bed.
- Rotate the workpiece by hand to ensure it clears the tool rest and bed.

5.3 Mounting a Workpiece (Faceplate Turning)
- Attach the faceplate securely to the headstock spindle.
- Prepare your workpiece (e.g., a bowl blank) by flattening one side and marking the center.
- Screw the workpiece firmly to the faceplate using appropriate wood screws. Ensure screws are short enough not to protrude through the other side of the workpiece.
- Adjust the tool rest close to the workpiece, ensuring it clears the rotating piece.

5.4 Turning Techniques
Always present the turning tool to the workpiece at the correct angle and with controlled pressure. Start with light cuts and gradually increase depth. Maintain a firm grip on the tool and keep your body balanced.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Scheppach DM500T Wood Lathe.
6.1 Cleaning
- After each use, disconnect the power and clean wood dust and chips from the machine, especially from the motor vents and moving parts.
- Use a brush or compressed air. Avoid using water or solvents directly on electrical components.
6.2 Lubrication
- Periodically apply a light machine oil to the bedways and tailstock quill to ensure smooth movement.
- Do not over-lubricate. Wipe off any excess.
6.3 Belt Inspection
Regularly check the drive belt for wear, cracks, or tension. Replace if necessary. Ensure the belt is correctly tensioned for optimal power transfer.
7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your wood lathe.
