PowerSmart 4400-Watt Portable Generator User Manual
Model: DL5040
Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your PowerSmart 4400-Watt Portable Inverter Generator. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the generator to ensure proper use and to prevent injury or damage.
Safety Information
Operating a generator requires adherence to strict safety guidelines. Failure to follow these instructions can result in serious injury or death.
- Carbon Monoxide Hazard: Generators produce carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas. Operate the generator outdoors only, far away from windows, doors, and vents. Never operate indoors, including garages or sheds.
- Hot Surfaces: The generator's engine and muffler become extremely hot during operation and remain hot for some time after shutdown. Avoid touching hot surfaces to prevent burns.
- Fire Hazard: Fuel is highly flammable. Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off and cool. Do not smoke or allow open flames near the generator.
- Electrical Shock Hazard: Do not operate the generator in wet conditions. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly grounded.

Setup
Before first use, or after extended storage, follow these steps to prepare your generator for operation:
- Add Engine Oil: Locate the oil fill cap/dipstick. Add the recommended engine oil (not included) to the proper level. A funnel is typically included for this purpose.
- Add Fuel: Ensure the generator is off and cool. Rotate the tank cap switch to the "ON" position. Carefully add unleaded gasoline (non-ethanol recommended) to the fuel tank. Do not overfill.
- Positioning: Place the generator on a firm, level surface outdoors, away from any combustible materials and at least 20 feet from any building openings.

Operating Instructions
Follow these steps to start and operate your PowerSmart generator:
- Engine Switch: Turn the engine switch to the "ON" position.
- Eco Mode: If desired, turn the energy-saving (Eco) switch to the "ON" position for reduced fuel consumption and quieter operation under light loads.
- Choke: Pull out the choke lever to close the choke valve (for cold starts).
- Start: Firmly pull the recoil starter handle until the engine starts.
- Choke Adjustment: Once the engine starts, gradually push the choke lever back in to open the choke valve as the engine warms up.
- Connecting Devices: Plug in your devices to the appropriate outlets. The generator features two 120V 15A receptacles and one 120V 30A RV-ready outlet.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your generator.
- Oil Changes: Change the engine oil after the first 20 hours of operation, and then every 100 hours or annually, whichever comes first.
- Air Filter: Inspect and clean the air filter regularly. Replace if heavily soiled or damaged.
- Spark Plug: Check the spark plug annually or every 100 hours. Clean or replace as needed.
- Fuel System: For long-term storage, drain the fuel tank and carburetor, or use a fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel degradation.
Troubleshooting
Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine will not start | No fuel; Low oil level; Choke not set correctly; Spark plug issue | Add fuel; Add oil; Adjust choke; Inspect/replace spark plug |
| No power output | Circuit breaker tripped; Overload; Loose connections | Reset circuit breaker; Reduce load; Check connections |
| Engine runs rough | Stale fuel; Clogged air filter; Dirty spark plug | Drain/replace fuel; Clean/replace air filter; Clean/replace spark plug |
