5. Installation

Follow these steps for proper installation of your Shurflo RV Water Pump:

  1. Preparation: Ensure the RV's main power is disconnected. Locate a suitable mounting area for the pump, preferably on a solid, flat surface, away from heat sources and direct sunlight. The pump can be mounted in any position.
  2. Mounting: Secure the pump to the chosen surface using the provided mounting screws. The pump has four mounting feet for stability.
  3. Electrical Connections: Connect the pump's two wires to the RV's 12 Volt DC power supply. Typically, the red wire connects to the positive (+) terminal and the black wire to the negative (-) or ground terminal. Ensure connections are secure and insulated. It is recommended to use appropriate wire connectors.
  4. Water Line Connections:
    • Identify the inlet and outlet ports on the pump. The inlet typically connects to the fresh water tank, and the outlet connects to the RV's plumbing system.
    • Attach the water lines to the pump's ports. The pump features thumb screws for easy connection. Hand-tighten these connections to prevent leaks.
    • Install the optional twist-on pipe strainer (Model 255-213) on the inlet side of the pump. This helps filter out debris and protect the pump.
  5. Final Checks: Double-check all electrical and plumbing connections for tightness and security.

6. Initial Setup and Priming

After installation, follow these steps to prepare the pump for use:

  1. Fill Fresh Water Tank: Ensure your RV's fresh water tank is adequately filled.
  2. Open Faucets: Open all hot and cold water faucets in your RV to allow air to escape the system.
  3. Restore Power: Turn on the 12 Volt DC power supply to the pump.
  4. Prime the Pump: The pump is self-priming. It will begin to run, drawing water from the tank and pushing air out of the system. Allow the pump to run until a steady stream of water flows from all faucets, indicating that the system is primed and air-free.
  5. Check for Leaks: Close all faucets and inspect all plumbing connections for any signs of leaks. Tighten connections as necessary.

7. Operation

The Shurflo 12 Volt RV Water Pump operates on an automatic demand system:

  • When a faucet is opened, the pressure in the water system drops, causing the pump to automatically turn on and supply water.
  • When all faucets are closed, the system pressure builds up, and the pump automatically shuts off.
  • The internal bypass design minimizes cycling and ensures quiet operation.
  • The pump is designed to run dry without damage, but it is always best practice to ensure your fresh water tank has water to prevent unnecessary wear.

8. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your water pump:

  1. Strainer Cleaning: The included twist-on pipe strainer (Model 255-213) should be inspected and cleaned periodically. Its transparent design allows you to easily see when cleaning is required.
    • Disconnect power to the pump.
    • Unscrew the clear bowl of the strainer.
    • Remove and clean the mesh filter screen under running water.
    • Reassemble the strainer, ensuring the O-ring is properly seated to prevent leaks. Hand-tighten the bowl.
  2. Winterization: Before freezing temperatures, ensure the pump and entire water system are properly winterized to prevent damage from freezing water. Consult your RV's manual for specific winterization procedures.
  3. General Inspection: Periodically check all hoses, connections, and electrical wiring for wear, damage, or leaks. Address any issues promptly.
