1. Introduction and Overview
This manual provides essential instructions for the proper use, care, and maintenance of your Fossil Townsman ME3197 Automatic Watch. This timepiece features an automatic movement, meaning it is powered by the motion of your wrist and does not require a battery.

The watch features a 44mm black plated stainless steel case, a black dial with a skeleton design revealing the automatic movement, and a black plated stainless steel bracelet. It is designed for daily wear and offers water resistance up to 50 meters.
2. Initial Setup
2.1. Setting the Time
- Pull the crown out to position 2. The crown is the small knob on the side of the watch case.
- Rotate the crown either clockwise or counter-clockwise to adjust the hour and minute hands to the correct time.
- Once the time is set, push the crown back in to position 1 (normal operating position) to engage the movement.

2.2. Winding the Watch
Your Fossil Townsman ME3197 is an automatic watch, meaning it self-winds with the natural motion of your wrist. However, if the watch has stopped due to lack of wear, you may need to manually wind it to initiate the movement.
- To manually wind, ensure the crown is in position 1 (pushed in).
- Rotate the crown clockwise approximately 20-30 times. You may feel a slight resistance. Do not overwind.
- After manual winding, wear the watch for several hours to allow the automatic movement to build up its power reserve.
2.3. Adjusting the Bracelet
The stainless steel bracelet may require adjustment to fit your wrist comfortably. It is recommended to have this adjustment performed by a professional jeweler or watch technician to prevent damage to the links or clasp.

3. Operating Instructions
3.1. Automatic Movement
The ME3197 watch is equipped with an automatic mechanical movement. This movement is powered by the kinetic energy generated by your arm and wrist movements. When worn regularly, the watch will remain wound and keep accurate time. If the watch is not worn for an extended period (typically 36-40 hours), the power reserve will deplete, and the watch will stop. Refer to Section 2.2 for manual winding instructions to restart the watch.

3.2. Water Resistance
This watch is water resistant to 5 ATM (50 meters / 165 feet). This rating means the watch is suitable for short periods of exposure to water, such as washing hands, showering, or bathing. It is not suitable for recreational swimming, diving, snorkeling, or any water sports involving high-velocity water impact.
- Ensure the crown is fully pushed in before any contact with water.
- Do not operate the crown or pushers (if present) while the watch is wet or submerged.
- Avoid exposing the watch to extreme temperature changes, as this can compromise water seals.
4. Maintenance
4.1. Cleaning Your Watch
To maintain the appearance of your watch:
- Wipe the case and bracelet regularly with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
- For stainless steel, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
- If the watch has been exposed to saltwater, rinse it gently with fresh water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
4.2. General Care
- Avoid extreme temperatures: Do not expose your watch to sudden temperature changes or extreme heat or cold, as this can affect the movement and seals.
- Avoid magnetic fields: Keep your watch away from strong magnetic fields (e.g., speakers, refrigerators, mobile phone cases with magnetic closures), as these can affect the accuracy of the mechanical movement.
- Avoid shocks: While durable, avoid dropping your watch or subjecting it to severe impacts.
- Storage: When not wearing the watch, store it in a dry place, preferably in its original box or a watch case, away from direct sunlight.

5. Troubleshooting
- Watch has stopped: This is normal for an automatic watch if it has not been worn for an extended period. Manually wind the watch (refer to Section 2.2) and wear it to restart the movement.
- Time is inaccurate:
- Ensure the watch is sufficiently wound by wearing it regularly or manually winding it.
- Check if the watch has been exposed to strong magnetic fields. If so, demagnetization by a professional may be required.
- If inaccuracy persists, the watch may require servicing by an authorized technician.
- Moisture under the crystal: If you notice condensation or moisture inside the watch, immediately take it to an authorized service center. This indicates a breach in the water resistance.
