5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Pre-Operation Checklist

  • Check engine oil level and add if necessary (Engine Oil Capacity: 0.6L). Do not overfill.
  • Fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline (Fuel Tank Capacity: 3L). Do not overfill. Tighten the fuel cap securely to prevent fire risk.
  • Ensure the engine key is fully inserted.
  • Verify all controls are functioning correctly.

5.2. Starting the Engine

Your Ariens snow blower can be started using either the recoil (pull) start or the electric start.

Recoil Start:

  1. Turn the fuel switch to the ON position.
  2. Turn the choke lever to the START position.
  3. Press the primer bulb 1-3 times (do not exceed 3 times).
  4. Pull the recoil starter rapidly to manually start the engine.
  5. Once started, run the engine for 30-40 seconds at idle speed, then turn the choke lever to the RUN position.

Electric Start:

Please complete Steps 1 through 8 of the recoil start procedure before using the electric start.

Note: Do not press the electric start button for more than 5 seconds, as this may cause spark plug damage.

  1. Connect the machine to a power source.
  2. Press the red electric start button for 1-3 seconds to start the engine.
  3. Once started, run the engine for 30-40 seconds at idle speed, then turn the choke lever to the RUN position.

5.3. Operating Controls

  • Drive Control: Engage the drive lever to propel the snow blower forward or backward. Your model features 8 speeds for optimal control.
  • Auger Control: Engage the auger lever to activate the rotating auger, which collects and feeds snow into the impeller.
  • Chute Control: Use the chute crank to adjust the direction of snow discharge. Adjust the deflector on the chute to control the height and distance of the snow throw.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your snow blower.

  • Engine Oil: Check the oil level before each use. Change the engine oil annually or after every 50 hours of operation.
  • Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug annually. Replace if worn or fouled.
  • Fuel System: Use fresh, stabilized gasoline. Drain the fuel system or use a fuel stabilizer for off-season storage.
  • Auger and Impeller: Regularly inspect the auger and impeller for wear or damage. Clear any debris or ice buildup.
  • Shear Pins: Keep spare shear pins on hand. Replace immediately if the auger stops rotating but the engine is running.
  • Tires: Check tire pressure regularly to ensure proper traction.
  • General Cleaning: Clean the snow blower after each use, removing snow and ice buildup from all surfaces.

7. Troubleshooting

Here are solutions to common issues you might encounter:

  • Engine Fails to Start:
    • Check fuel level and ensure fresh gasoline is used.
    • Verify the engine key is fully inserted.
    • Ensure the choke lever is in the START position for cold starts.
    • Check the spark plug for fouling or damage.
    • If starting in extremely cold conditions, ensure the engine is sufficiently primed.
  • Snow Blower Not Throwing Snow:
    • Check if the auger is rotating. If not, a shear pin may be broken.
    • Clear any clogs in the auger housing or discharge chute using a clean-out tool.
  • Loss of Drive:
    • Inspect the drive belt for wear or damage.
    • Ensure the drive lever is fully engaged.
