Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance of your thermostat. If you are unsure about any steps, consult a qualified HVAC technician.

Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Power Off: Before beginning, turn off power to your heating and cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel.
  • Identify Wires: Carefully label each wire connected to your old thermostat using the provided cable labels. Take a picture of the old thermostat's wiring for reference.
  • Remove Old Thermostat: Detach the old thermostat from the wall.
  • Mount New Base: Mount the new thermostat's universal sub-base to the wall or junction box using the provided screws and anchors.

Wiring Diagram and Terminal Designations

Connect the labeled wires to the corresponding terminals on the new thermostat's sub-base. Refer to the diagrams below for typical wiring configurations.

Detailed installation guide showing the thermostat's backplate with terminal blocks and a note to remove the metal jumper wire if both RH/R and RC wires are present. Includes common 24VAC transformer, change-over relay, heat relay, cool relay, and fan relay connections.

Gas or Electric System Setup

After wiring, configure the thermostat for your specific system type (Gas or Electric) using the switch on the back of the thermostat unit.

Diagram showing the 'ELEC' and 'GAS' switch on the back of the thermostat. Instructions explain that for Gas systems, the fan operation switch should be in the GAS position, and for Electric systems, it should be in the ELEC position to allow the thermostat to operate the fan when the G terminal is connected.

Image: Location and function of the Gas/Electric system selection switch.

  • Gas System: For systems that control the fan during a call for heat, set the fan operation switch to the GAS position.
  • Electric System: Set the thermostat operation switch to the ELEC position. This setting allows the thermostat to operate the fan when the G terminal is connected to the fan relay.

Operation

Your ELECTECK thermostat is designed for simple and intuitive operation.

Basic Controls

  • Temperature Adjustment: Use the + (Up) and - (Down) buttons to set your desired temperature. The display will show both the current room temperature and the set temperature.
  • System Switch: Slide the SYSTEM switch to select your desired mode: COOL, OFF, or HEAT.
  • Fan Switch: Slide the FAN switch to select ON (fan runs continuously) or AUTO (fan runs only when heating or cooling is active).
  • Backlight: The display backlight will illuminate when any button is pressed and will turn off automatically after approximately 10 seconds of inactivity.

Advanced Settings

  • Temperature Display Options: You can switch between Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C) temperature display. Refer to the full installation manual for specific steps.
  • Room Temperature Calibration: The thermostat allows for adjustment of the displayed room temperature to match an external reference thermometer, if needed. This can typically be adjusted by up to four degrees. Consult the installation manual for calibration procedures.
  • Compressor Delay Protection: This feature protects your compressor from short cycling. It can be set to ON or OFF. When ON, the compressor will delay restarting for 5 minutes after it has turned off.

Maintenance

Battery Replacement

The thermostat can be powered by two AAA batteries. When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries promptly to ensure continuous operation. The battery compartment is easily accessible on the front of the unit.

  1. Open the battery compartment door located at the bottom front of the thermostat.
  2. Remove the old AAA batteries.
  3. Insert two new AAA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery compartment door.

Cleaning

To clean the thermostat, gently wipe the exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or chemical sprays, as these can damage the unit.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your thermostat, refer to the common problems and solutions below:

ProblemPossible Cause / Solution
Display is blank or dimLow or dead batteries. Replace with fresh AAA batteries. Check 24VAC power supply if using wired power.
Thermostat not responding to temperature changesCheck system switch (HEAT/COOL/OFF) is in the correct position. Ensure set temperature is above/below current room temperature for heating/cooling. Verify wiring connections are secure.
Fan not operatingCheck FAN switch is set to ON or AUTO. Ensure G wire is properly connected. Verify Gas/Electric system setting is correct.
System cycles too frequently (short cycling)Compressor delay protection might be off. Enable the 5-minute compressor delay protection.
Inaccurate temperature readingThermostat location may be affected by drafts, direct sunlight, or heat sources. Use the room temperature calibration feature to adjust the display.
No heating or coolingCheck circuit breaker for HVAC system. Verify all wiring connections. Ensure system switch is in the correct mode (HEAT or COOL).
