1. Introduction

The JIFETOR Engine Compression Tester Gauge Kit (Model JT018S1-2) is designed for accurately measuring the compression pressure in gasoline engine cylinders. This tool assists in diagnosing common engine problems such as valve sticking, carbon build-up, cracked cylinder heads, defective main gaskets, poorly seated or worn piston rings, and burned or damaged pistons. This manual provides instructions for the safe and effective use of this kit.

3. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions when working with engines and using this compression tester:

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves.
  • Ensure the engine is cool enough to handle components safely, but warm enough for accurate readings (refer to vehicle manufacturer specifications).
  • Work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Disconnect the ignition system (e.g., remove spark plug wires, disable ignition coil) to prevent the engine from starting and to avoid electrical shock.

4. Setup

  1. Prepare the Engine:

    • Disable the fuel system to prevent fuel injection.
    • Remove all spark plugs from the engine. Keep them organized by cylinder.
  2. Assemble the Tester:
    • Select the appropriate adapter (10mm, 12mm, 14mm, or 18mm) that matches the spark plug thread size of the cylinder you are testing. For spark plug wells where threaded adapters do not fit, use the straight or angled push-on connectors.
    • Thread the selected brass adapter onto the flexible extension hose, or attach the push-on connector to the hose.
    • Connect the other end of the flexible extension hose to the quick coupler on the pressure gauge. Ensure a secure connection by pushing the quick plug into the coupler and pulling back the anti-slip knurled grip ring.

5. Operating Instructions

  1. Connect to Cylinder:
    • Insert the chosen adapter or push-on connector into the spark plug hole of the cylinder you wish to test.
    • If using a threaded adapter, hand-tighten it securely. Do not overtighten.
    • If using a push-on connector, press it firmly against the cylinder head to create a seal.
  2. Perform the Test:
    • Have an assistant crank the engine for 5-10 seconds, or until the gauge needle stops rising. Ensure the throttle is held wide open during cranking for accurate results.
    • Observe the pressure reading on the gauge. The gauge features a built-in check valve to hold the peak pressure reading.

  3. Record and Release Pressure:
    • Note down the reading for the tested cylinder.
    • Press the release valve button on the side of the gauge to release the pressure before disconnecting the tester from the cylinder.

  4. Repeat for All Cylinders:
    • Repeat steps 1-3 for each cylinder in the engine.
    • Compare the readings across all cylinders.

6. Interpreting Results

Consult your vehicle's service manual for specific compression specifications. General guidelines for interpreting results are as follows:

  • Normal Compression: Readings should be within the manufacturer's specified range and generally within 10-15% of each other across all cylinders.
  • Low Reading in One Cylinder: May indicate issues such as:
    • Worn or damaged piston rings
    • Burned or bent valve
    • Damaged valve seat
    • Blown head gasket
  • Low Readings in Two Adjacent Cylinders: Often points to a blown head gasket between those cylinders.
  • Low Readings Across All Cylinders: Could indicate general engine wear, incorrect valve timing, or carbon build-up.
  • Zero Reading: Suggests a severely damaged component, such as a broken valve, hole in a piston, or completely blown head gasket.

To further diagnose low compression, a "wet" compression test can be performed by adding a small amount of oil to the cylinder and retesting. If compression significantly increases, it often indicates worn piston rings. If it does not, valve issues or head gasket problems are more likely.

7. Maintenance and Care

  • After each use, wipe down the gauge, hose, and adapters with a clean, dry cloth to remove any oil or debris.
  • Store all components in the provided blow-molded case to protect them from damage and keep them organized.
  • Do not expose the gauge to extreme temperatures or harsh chemicals.
  • Regularly inspect the hose for cracks or leaks, and the adapters for thread damage. Replace any damaged components.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Reading or Very Low Reading:
    • Ensure the adapter or push-on connector is properly sealed in the spark plug hole.
    • Check all connections (hose to gauge, adapter to hose) for leaks.
    • Verify the engine is cranking sufficiently.
    • Confirm the throttle is wide open during the test.
  • Inconsistent Readings:
    • Ensure consistent cranking time and throttle position for each cylinder.
    • Re-check connections for tightness.
    • Verify the engine is at the correct operating temperature.
  • Gauge Needle Does Not Hold Pressure:
    • The built-in check valve may be faulty or obstructed. Contact customer support.
    • Ensure the release valve is fully closed before testing.
