5.3. Powering the Crosshair Illumination

The illuminated crosshair requires two LR41 button cell batteries. To install or replace them:

  1. Unscrew the illumination unit from the eyepiece.
  2. Insert the LR41 batteries with the correct polarity.
  3. Screw the illumination unit back onto the eyepiece.

6. Operation

6.1. Focusing

The viewfinder features a helical focuser for precise adjustments. Rotate the knurled ring on the focuser to achieve a sharp image. Both the main object and the crosshair can be focused independently for optimal clarity.

6.2. Using the Illuminated Crosshair

The eyepiece includes an adjustable red-illuminated crosshair. Rotate the illumination unit to turn the light on and adjust its brightness. The crosshair aids in precise centering of objects, especially in low-light conditions. The scale markings (graduation = 0.85 degrees) provide a reference for estimating distances.

6.3. Autoguiding Functionality

This viewfinder can be used as a compact autoguiding device. Its 1.25-inch connection and T2 camera connection thread (M42 x 0.75 mm) allow for the attachment of autoguiding cameras. The precise helical focusing ensures that the guide star remains sharp, which is crucial for long-exposure astrophotography.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning Lenses: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. For stubborn smudges, use a small amount of optical cleaning fluid. Avoid touching the lens surfaces with your fingers.
  • Cleaning Body: Wipe the body of the viewfinder with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the viewfinder in its original packaging or a protective case in a cool, dry place. Ensure dust caps are in place to protect the lenses.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace the LR41 batteries for the crosshair illumination when the light dims or fails. Dispose of old batteries responsibly.
