Key Features:

  • Multi-Disk Cork and Stainless Steel Drag Washers: Provides smooth and consistent drag performance.
  • ALC: Alumilite Diecast Aluminum Frame: Ensures durability and lightweight construction.
  • Precision Machined Stainless Steel Spool Shaft: Offers strength and corrosion resistance.
  • One-way Roller Bearing: Allows the drag to engage in one direction only for reliable hook sets.
  • Precision Machined Brass Bushing Drive System: Contributes to smooth operation.
  • Super Large Arbor Design: Facilitates fast line retrieval and reduces line memory.

4. Setup

4.1 Attaching the Reel to a Rod

  1. Align the reel foot with the reel seat on your fly rod.
  2. Tighten the locking rings on the reel seat to secure the reel firmly in place. Ensure there is no wobble.

4.2 Spooling the Line

  1. Remove the spool from the reel frame. This typically involves unscrewing the center cap or pressing a release button, depending on the model.
  2. Attach the backing line to the spool using an arbor knot.
  3. Wind the backing evenly onto the spool.
  4. Connect the fly line to the backing using a strong knot, such as a nail knot or Albright knot.
  5. Wind the fly line onto the spool, ensuring it lies flat and even. Leave enough space for the leader and tippet.
  6. Reattach the spool to the reel frame, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

4.3 Changing Retrieve Direction (Left-Hand to Right-Hand Retrieve)

The OKUMA SLV-45b reel is ambidextrous and can be configured for either left-hand or right-hand retrieve.

  1. Remove the spool from the reel frame.
  2. Locate the one-way roller bearing assembly, usually found under the spool or within the reel frame.
  3. Carefully remove the bearing or flip the bearing housing according to the reel's design. The bearing typically has a specific orientation for each retrieve direction.
  4. Reinsert the bearing in the opposite orientation for the desired retrieve direction.
  5. Reassemble the spool onto the reel frame. Test the retrieve direction to ensure it is correct.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Adjusting the Drag System

The multi-disk cork and stainless steel drag system allows for precise control over line tension.

  • To Increase Drag: Turn the drag knob clockwise. This will apply more resistance to the line, making it harder for a fish to pull line from the reel.
  • To Decrease Drag: Turn the drag knob counter-clockwise. This will reduce resistance, allowing line to be pulled more easily.
  • Always set the drag appropriate for your tippet strength and the size of fish you are targeting. A good starting point is to set the drag to approximately 25% of your tippet's breaking strength.

5.2 Casting and Retrieving

  • Casting: While casting, ensure the line flows freely from the reel. The reel's primary function during casting is to hold the line.
  • Retrieving: After a cast, retrieve the line by turning the handle. The large arbor design aids in fast line retrieval. When fighting a fish, use the drag system and rod to control the fish, retrieving line as needed.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

  • After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel.
  • Wipe the reel dry with a soft cloth.
  • Remove the spool and clean any debris or salt residue from the arbor and drag system components.

6.2 Lubrication

  • Apply a small amount of reel oil to the handle knob and any moving parts as needed.
  • Avoid over-lubrication, especially near the drag washers, as this can impair drag performance.

6.3 Storage

  • Store the reel in a protective case or bag to prevent scratches and damage.
  • Loosen the drag completely before storing for extended periods to prevent compression of the drag washers.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Drag is not smooth or inconsistent. Dirt or debris in drag system; drag washers are dry or damaged. Clean the drag washers and components. If dry, apply a very thin layer of specialized drag grease (not oil). If damaged, replace washers.
Reel handle is stiff or difficult to turn. Lack of lubrication; dirt or corrosion in bearings/bushings. Clean and lubricate the handle knob and main shaft.
Reel makes unusual noises during retrieve. Internal components are loose or damaged; debris inside the reel. Inspect the reel for loose parts. Clean thoroughly. If noise persists, contact customer support.
Spool detaches unexpectedly. Spool not properly secured; release mechanism faulty. Ensure the spool is fully engaged and locked into the reel frame. If the issue persists, inspect the release mechanism for damage.
