1. Introduction
The Zoom LiveTrak L-8 is a portable 8-channel digital mixer and multitrack recorder designed for podcasting and music production. This kit includes the L-8 mixer, two Zoom ZDM-1 dynamic microphones with windscreens and tabletop stands, two Zoom headphones, and a cleaning cloth, providing a complete solution for two-person audio recording.

3. Setup
3.1 Powering the LiveTrak L-8
The L-8 can be powered in two ways:
- AC Power: Connect the included USB cable to the L-8's USB port and the Zoom AD-17 AC adapter. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet.
- Battery Power: For portable use, insert four AA batteries (alkaline, NiMH, or lithium, sold separately) into the battery compartment on the underside of the unit.
3.2 Connecting Microphones
- Attach each Zoom ZDM-1 microphone to a tabletop tripod mic stand.
- Place a windscreen over each microphone.
- Connect one end of an XLR cable to the microphone and the other end to an XLR input (channels 1-6) on the LiveTrak L-8.
- If using condenser microphones (not included in this kit), activate phantom power (+48V) for the respective channel using the switch on the L-8. The ZDM-1 microphones are dynamic and do not require phantom power.

3.3 Connecting Headphones
Connect the two Zoom headphones to any of the four 1/4" stereo headphone outputs on the LiveTrak L-8. Each output has independent level controls and mix selectors for personalized monitoring.

3.4 Connecting Other Inputs
- Hi-Z Inputs: Channels 1 and 2 support 1/4" Hi-Z inputs for direct connection of instruments like guitars or basses.
- Smartphone Connection: Use the included 3.5mm TRRS cable to connect a smartphone to the L-8 for integrating phone calls into your podcast. The Mix-Minus function automatically prevents echo and feedback.
- USB Audio Interface: Connect the L-8 to a computer or iOS device via USB to use it as a 12-input/4-output audio interface.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Basic Recording
- Insert an SD card (Class 10 or higher, up to 512 GB) into the SD card slot.
- Power on the L-8.
- Adjust the input gain for each connected microphone or instrument using the gain knobs. Monitor levels on the display to avoid clipping.
- Press the REC button for each track you wish to record. The button will illuminate red.
- Press the main REC button (transport control) to start recording. Press it again to stop.
- Recordings are saved to the SD card as individual tracks and a stereo mix.

4.2 Monitoring and Mix-Minus
- Each headphone output has a dedicated level knob and a mix selector. Use these to create custom monitor mixes for each participant.
- When using the smartphone input, the L-8's built-in Mix-Minus function automatically removes the caller's own voice from their headphone feed, preventing echo and feedback.

4.3 Sound Pads
The L-8 features six assignable Sound Pads with 13 preset sounds. These can be used to trigger intros, outros, jingles, ads, or sound effects during live broadcasts or recordings.
- Press a Sound Pad button to play the assigned sound.
- Sounds can be customized and loaded from an SD card. Refer to the full L-8 manual for detailed instructions on customizing Sound Pads.
4.4 Using as an Audio Interface
To use the L-8 as an audio interface:
- Connect the L-8 to your computer or iOS device via USB.
- Set the L-8 to 'Audio Interface' mode (refer to the device's menu for this setting).
- Your computer or iOS device should recognize the L-8 as a 12-input/4-output audio interface. Select it as your audio input/output device in your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) or recording software.
5. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use the provided cleaning cloth to gently wipe the surfaces of the L-8, microphones, and headphones. Avoid using liquid cleaners or abrasive materials.
- Storage: When not in use, store the kit in a dry, dust-free environment. Disconnect all cables and remove batteries if storing for extended periods.
- Cable Care: Avoid sharp bends or kinks in cables. Store them neatly to prevent damage.

6. Troubleshooting
- No Power: Ensure the AC adapter is securely connected and plugged into a working outlet, or that fresh batteries are correctly inserted.
- No Sound from Microphone: Check XLR cable connections. Verify that the input gain knob for the channel is turned up. Ensure the channel's REC/PLAY button is engaged.
- No Headphone Audio: Check headphone connections. Ensure the headphone output level knob is turned up. Verify the monitor mix settings for the headphone output.
- Recording Issues: Ensure an SD card is inserted and has sufficient free space. Check that the SD card is Class 10 or higher. Format the SD card if issues persist (this will erase all data).
- Echo/Feedback during Phone Call: Ensure the Mix-Minus function is active for the smartphone input.
