Beckett BK171UL Condensate Pump with Safety Switch User Manual

Model: BK171UL

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Beckett BK171UL Condensate Pump. This pump is designed for automatic removal of condensate from HVAC equipment, including air conditioners, furnaces, boilers, dehumidifiers, and high-efficiency oil or gas-fired furnaces. It is suitable for condensate water temperatures up to 150°F and acidic condensate.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Risk of Electric Shock. Disconnect power before servicing.

  • Read all instructions carefully before installation and operation.
  • Ensure the power supply matches the pump's voltage (115V).
  • Do not operate the pump with a damaged cord or plug.
  • Do not immerse the pump in water.
  • This pump is designed for indoor use only.
  • Keep hands clear of moving parts during operation.
  • Ensure proper grounding as per local electrical codes.
  • The pump is equipped with a safety switch. Ensure it is correctly wired to prevent overflow.

4. Installation and Setup

4.1 Mounting the Pump

The pump features stainless steel multi-slot mounting tabs for secure installation. Ensure the pump is placed on a level surface. Use the integrated bullseye level on the lid to confirm proper horizontal alignment.

4.2 Condensate Inlet Connections

The pump is equipped with four 1-1/8-inch diameter inlet holes for connecting condensate drain lines from your HVAC equipment. Connect the drain line(s) to any available inlet(s).

4.3 Discharge Line Connection

Connect a 3/8" I.D. vinyl tubing (not included) to the 3/8" O.D. barbed check valve. The check valve twists to lock into place on the pump, preventing backflow of discharged water. Route the discharge line to an appropriate drain, ensuring it has a continuous downward slope and is free from kinks or obstructions. The pump can lift water up to 17 feet vertically.

4.4 Electrical Connection

Plug the 6-ft grounded power cord into a standard 115V electrical outlet. Ensure the outlet is properly grounded and protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) if required by local codes.

4.5 Safety Switch Wiring

The integrated safety switch is designed to shut down the HVAC equipment or trigger an alarm in case of a pump malfunction or high water level, preventing overflow. Consult your HVAC equipment manual for proper wiring of the safety switch. Typically, the safety switch wires are connected in series with the low-voltage thermostat circuit of the HVAC unit.

5. Operation

5.1 Automatic On/Off Operation

The Beckett BK171UL pump operates automatically. When condensate water in the collection tank reaches a predetermined level, the pump will activate, remove the water, and then shut off once the water level drops. This automatic cycle ensures efficient condensate removal without constant monitoring.

5.2 Lift-to-Test Function

A "lift-to-test" tab is provided on the pump lid. Lifting this tab manually raises the float, simulating a high water level and activating the pump. This feature allows for quick testing of the pump's functionality and can also be used to drain the tank for servicing.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your condensate pump.

  • Monthly Inspection: Visually inspect the pump, inlet, and discharge lines for any blockages, leaks, or damage. Ensure the discharge line is free of kinks.
  • Quarterly Cleaning:
    1. Disconnect power to the pump and the HVAC unit.
    2. Use the lift-to-test tab to drain the tank, or manually remove any remaining water.
    3. Carefully remove the pump cover.
    4. Clean the collection tank, floats, and impeller area to remove any sludge, debris, or mineral deposits. A mild detergent and soft brush can be used.
    5. Rinse all components thoroughly with clean water.
    6. Reassemble the pump, ensuring the cover is securely in place.
    7. Reconnect power and test the pump using the lift-to-test tab.
  • Discharge Line: Periodically check the discharge line for algae or mineral buildup, especially if the pump is handling acidic condensate. Clean or replace the tubing as necessary.
