5. Operating Your Notebook

5.1 Windows 10 S Mode

Your notebook runs Windows 10 Home in S Mode, which is designed for security and performance. In S Mode, you can only install applications from the Microsoft Store. If you need to install applications from outside the Microsoft Store, you will need to switch out of S Mode.

Important: Switching out of S Mode is a one-way process. Once you switch, you cannot revert to S Mode.

Switching Out of S Mode

There is no cost to switch out of S Mode.

  1. On your PC running Windows 10 in S mode, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  2. In the "Switch to Windows 10 Home" or "Switch to Windows 10 Pro" section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, do not click that link.)
  3. On the "Switch out of S mode" page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the "Get" button. After you see a confirmation message, you will be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.

5.2 Using the Touchpad

The precision touchpad supports multi-touch gestures. Refer to Windows settings for customizing touchpad gestures.

  • Single Tap: Left-click.
  • Two-Finger Tap: Right-click.
  • Two-Finger Scroll: Scroll up or down.
  • Pinch-to-Zoom: Zoom in or out.

5.3 Connecting External Devices

Use the available USB 3.0 ports to connect peripherals. The Mini HDMI port allows connection to external displays.

For additional storage, insert a Micro SD card into the Micro SD slot. The notebook supports cards up to 512 GB.

6. Maintenance and Care

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the screen and exterior. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Battery Care: To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. Store the notebook in a cool, dry place if not used for extended periods.
  • Software Updates: Regularly check for and install Windows updates to ensure optimal performance and security.
  • Storage: Keep the eMMC storage from becoming completely full to maintain system responsiveness. Consider using the Micro SD slot for additional file storage.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Gateway Notebook.

7.1 Power Adapter Gets Hot

It is normal for power adapters to generate some heat during operation, especially when charging. However, if the adapter becomes excessively hot to the touch or emits a burning smell, discontinue use immediately and contact customer support.

7.2 Notebook Overheats

If the notebook feels excessively hot, especially on the bottom or near vents:

  • Ensure the notebook is on a hard, flat surface to allow for proper airflow. Avoid using it on soft surfaces like beds or couches.
  • Check for any obstructions in the ventilation openings.
  • Reduce the number of demanding applications running simultaneously.
  • If overheating persists, contact customer support.

7.3 Touchscreen Not Responding

If the touchscreen is not working:

  • Restart the notebook.
  • Ensure the screen is clean and free of debris.
  • Check for available Windows updates, which may include driver updates for the touchscreen.
  • If the issue continues, it may indicate a hardware problem.

7.4 System Performance is Slow

If the notebook is performing slowly:

  • Close unnecessary applications running in the background.
  • Ensure you have sufficient free space on the 64GB eMMC storage.
  • Check for and install any pending Windows updates.
  • Consider performing a system reset if performance issues are severe and persistent (backup your data first).

7.5 Missing Stylus/USB Flash Drive

The product is advertised to include a 3-in-1 Design Stylus (Stylus Pen + Ballpoint Pen + USB 3.0 64GB Flash Drive). If this item was not included in your package, please contact your retailer or Gateway customer support for assistance.
