6. Setup and Installation
No drilling or cutting is required for installation. The front cross bar is longer than the rear. It is recommended to have assistance when placing the bars on the roof rails to avoid scratching the vehicle.
6.1. Pre-Installation Steps
- Identify the front and rear cross bars. The front bar is longer.
- Identify the left (L) and right (R) end supports. The arrows on the supports should point towards the front of the car.
- Remove the cover plates from the vehicle's existing side rails.
6.2. Assembling the Cross Bars
- Remove the screws from the ends of each cross bar.
- Slide the end supports onto the cross bars. Ensure the correct support (L or R) is matched with the correct bar (front or rear) and oriented correctly (arrow facing forward).
- Insert the screws into the designated holes on the end supports and through the cross bar. Do not fully tighten them yet.
- Adjust the length of the cross bar by sliding the end supports until they align with the mounting points on your vehicle's side rails.
- Once aligned, tighten the screws to secure the end supports to the cross bars.
6.3. Mounting to Vehicle
- Carefully place the assembled front cross bar onto the front mounting points of your vehicle's side rails.
- Align the mounting holes on the cross bar end supports with the holes in the side rails.
- Insert the black bolts with washers into the mounting holes and tighten them halfway.
- Repeat for the rear cross bar.
- Once both bars are in place and aligned, fully tighten all black bolts, ensuring the brackets are snug against the car roof with no gaps. Do not overtighten.
- Install the plastic caps. First, insert the yellow plastic retainer tie through the hole on the inside of the bracket. Next, slide the end of the plastic cap over the bottom of the bracket. Finally, push down firmly on the bottom part of the plastic cap close to the car until it clicks securely into place.

7. Operating Instructions
Once installed, the Snailfly Cross Bars are ready for use. Adhere to the following guidelines for safe operation:
- Load Capacity: Do not exceed the maximum load capacity of 154 lbs (69.85 kg). Distribute the weight of your cargo evenly across the cross bars.
- Secure Cargo: Always ensure all cargo is securely fastened to the cross bars using appropriate tie-downs, straps, or cargo nets. Regularly check the security of your cargo during long trips.
- Driving Adjustments: Be aware that adding cargo to your roof can affect your vehicle's handling, braking, and fuel efficiency. Drive cautiously, especially in windy conditions or when cornering.
- Height Clearance: Be mindful of increased vehicle height when entering garages, car washes, or areas with low overhead clearance.
8. Maintenance
Regular maintenance will ensure the longevity and safe operation of your Snailfly Cross Bars:
- Regular Inspection: Periodically check all bolts, screws, and fasteners to ensure they are tight. Retighten as necessary.
- Cleaning: Clean the cross bars with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.
- Seasonal Removal: If the cross bars are not in use for extended periods, consider removing them to reduce wear and tear, and to potentially improve fuel efficiency.
- Damage Check: Inspect the cross bars for any signs of damage, corrosion, or wear before each use. Do not use damaged cross bars.
9. Troubleshooting
Below are common issues and their potential solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Excessive wind noise | Improper installation; loose components; cargo not aerodynamic | Ensure all components are tightly secured. Re-check installation steps. Adjust cargo placement for better aerodynamics. |
| Cross bars feel loose | Mounting bolts are not sufficiently tightened | Re-tighten all mounting bolts using the provided Allen wrench. Ensure no gaps between brackets and car roof. |
| Plastic end caps fall off | Caps not fully secured during installation | Ensure the plastic retainer tie is used and the cap is pushed down firmly until it clicks into place. |
