BOSS OC-5
BOSS OC-5 Octave Pedal Instruction Manual
Model: OC-5
Introduction
Fusing classic BOSS octave tones with the latest tracking technologies, the BOSS OC-5 sets a new standard in octave pedal performance. Vintage mode provides a spot-on recreation of the legendary mono OC-2 from 1982, while Poly mode offers numerous enhancements for extended-range playing. With the addition of an octave-up feature, a span of three octaves is now available for creative exploration. From fat, low mono sounds to octave-shifted chords and more, the OC-5 delivers the widest range, finest sound quality, and best playability in any octave stomp to date.
Key Features
- Polyphonic Guitar/Bass Octave Pedal with Mono/Poly Modes.
- Dry Direct Output for flexible signal routing.
- Lowest Range setting in Poly mode applies the octave effect to only the lowest note in a chord.
- The industry-standard octave pedal, updated with enhanced features.

Setup
Power Supply
The BOSS OC-5 operates on a 9V DC power supply. Use a BOSS PSA series adapter (sold separately) or a 9V battery. Ensure the correct polarity when connecting the adapter.
Connections
- Input Jack: Connect your guitar or bass here.
- Output Jack: Connect this to your amplifier or the next pedal in your signal chain.
- Direct Out Jack: This output provides your dry (unaffected) signal, allowing for separate amplification or processing.
- DC In Jack: Connect a 9V DC power adapter.
- GUITAR/BASS Switch: Set this switch to match your instrument (Guitar or Bass) for optimized tracking performance.
Operating Instructions
Controls
- DIRECT LEVEL Knob: Adjusts the volume of your original, unaffected instrument signal.
- +1 OCT LEVEL Knob: Controls the volume of the sound one octave above your original note.
- -1 OCT LEVEL Knob: Controls the volume of the sound one octave below your original note.
- -2 OCT RANGE Knob: Controls the volume of the sound two octaves below your original note. In Poly mode, this knob also functions as a 'Lowest' range setting.
- MODE Switch (VINTAGE/POLY):
- VINTAGE: Provides the classic monophonic octave sound, replicating the legendary BOSS OC-2. Ideal for single-note lines.
- POLY: Offers polyphonic tracking, allowing the octave effect to be applied to chords. The -2 OCT RANGE knob can be used to apply the octave effect only to the lowest note in a chord.
Basic Operation
1. Connect your instrument to the INPUT jack and your amplifier to the OUTPUT jack. If using a separate amplifier for your dry signal, connect the DIRECT OUT to that amplifier.
2. Connect the power supply. The CHECK indicator will light up when the pedal is active.
3. Select your desired mode (VINTAGE or POLY) using the MODE switch.
4. Adjust the DIRECT LEVEL, +1 OCT LEVEL, -1 OCT LEVEL, and -2 OCT RANGE knobs to achieve your desired blend of dry and octave effects.
5. For bass players, ensure the GUITAR/BASS switch on the rear panel is set to BASS for optimal tracking.

Maintenance
Cleaning
Wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.
Battery Replacement
When the CHECK indicator dims or fails to light, the battery is low and should be replaced. To replace the battery, loosen the thumbscrew on the front of the pedal, open the pedal, and replace the 9V battery. Ensure correct polarity.
Troubleshooting
- No Sound: Check all cable connections (input, output, power). Ensure the power adapter is functioning or the battery is not depleted. Verify that the instrument and amplifier volumes are up.
- Weak or Distorted Sound: Check battery level. Ensure all cables are in good condition. Adjust the level knobs on the pedal.
- Poor Tracking: Ensure the GUITAR/BASS switch is set correctly for your instrument. For Poly mode, try playing cleaner chords or single notes if tracking is inconsistent.
- Unwanted Noise: Ensure all connections are secure. Try using a different power outlet or power supply to rule out electrical interference.
