Choosing the Right Size

Measuring Your Pet
To determine if this door is appropriate for your pet, measure your pet's height and width:

General Installation Steps
- Prepare the Door/Wall: Choose a suitable location on your door or wall, ensuring it is clear of electrical wires, plumbing, or structural elements. The bottom of the pet door opening should be at a comfortable height for your pet to step through.
- Apply Template: Tape the provided cutting template to your door or wall at the desired height. Use a pencil to trace the outline of the opening and the screw holes.
- Drill Pilot Holes: Drill pilot holes at the corners of the traced opening and for all screw locations.
- Cut Opening: Carefully cut out the opening using a jigsaw or appropriate cutting tool. For brick walls, specialized tools and techniques are required. Ensure the edges are smooth.
- Install Tunnel (if needed): If your door or wall is thicker than the pet door frame, use the included tunnel extension. Trim the tunnel to the correct depth if necessary.
- Mount Pet Door: Place the exterior frame of the pet door into the opening from one side. From the other side, align the interior frame and secure both halves together using the provided screws. Ensure the door is level and the flap swings freely.
- Seal (Optional): For improved weatherproofing, apply a silicone sealant around the exterior frame of the pet door.

Operation
The PetSafe Staywell Original 2-Way Pet Door features a simple two-way locking mechanism and a closing panel for controlled access.
2-Way Locking System
The pet door allows your pet to enter and exit freely. There is no complex locking mechanism on the flap itself, providing unrestricted two-way movement.
Using the Closing Panel
For times when you need to restrict your pet's access, a rigid closing panel can be inserted from the inside of the house. This panel slides down into grooves on the interior frame, effectively blocking the opening.
- To Close: Slide the panel firmly down into the grooves until it is fully seated.
- To Open: Lift the panel upwards and remove it from the grooves. Store the panel in a safe place when not in use.

Training Your Pet
Most pets can be trained to use the pet door with patience and positive reinforcement. Here are some tips:
- Initial Introduction: Hold the flap open and coax your pet through with treats or toys.
- Gradual Training: Once comfortable with the open flap, gently lower it so your pet learns to push it.
- Positive Reinforcement: Always reward your pet with praise and treats when they successfully use the door.
- Consistency: Repeat training sessions regularly until your pet is confident using the door on their own.

Maintenance
Regular cleaning and inspection will prolong the life of your PetSafe Staywell pet door.
- Cleaning: Wipe the frame and flap with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the plastic.
- Inspection: Periodically check the flap for cracks or tears, and ensure the screws are tight. Replace worn parts as needed.
- Clear Debris: Ensure the flap's hinges and the track for the closing panel are free of dirt, pet hair, or other debris.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your pet door, try these common solutions:
- Flap Not Swinging Freely: Check for obstructions around the flap or debris in the hinge area. Ensure the door frame is installed level and not warped.
- Drafts Around the Door: Verify that the door is properly sealed during installation. If drafts persist, consider adding weatherstripping around the frame.
- Closing Panel Sticks: Clean the grooves on the interior frame and the edges of the closing panel to remove any dirt or debris.
- Pet Hesitant to Use Door: Revisit the training steps. Use more enticing treats and ensure the flap is not too stiff for your pet to push.
