Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation of your APC UPS 1500VA Sine Wave UPS Battery Backup, model BR1500MS2. This uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is designed to offer guaranteed power and surge protection for wireless networks, computers, and other electronic devices in your home or business. It provides backup battery power during outages and protection against unsafe voltage fluctuations, damaging power surges, and spikes. The APC Back-UPS PRO series is ideal for protecting sensitive electronics, including computers, external hard drives, and routers, ensuring data integrity and continuous connectivity. Featuring Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) and active Power Factor Correction (PFC) compatibility, this unit also includes a user-replaceable battery to extend its service life.
Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to set up your APC UPS unit:
- Unpacking and Inspection: Carefully remove the UPS from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage. Retain the packaging for future transport or storage.
- Connect the Battery: Before initial use, the internal battery must be connected. Locate the battery compartment, typically at the bottom or rear of the unit. Follow the instructions on the yellow labels inside the compartment to connect the battery terminals. Ensure a secure connection.
- Placement: Place the UPS on a flat, stable surface away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, or moisture. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit. The compact design allows for placement on a desk or floor.
- Initial Charging: Plug the UPS power cord directly into a grounded wall outlet. Allow the unit to charge for at least 24 hours before connecting any devices to ensure full battery capacity. The LCD display will indicate charging status.
- Connecting Devices:
- Battery Backup & Surge Protected Outlets: Connect critical devices such as your computer, monitor, router, and external hard drives to the outlets labeled "Battery + Surge" (6 outlets). These outlets provide power during outages and protection against surges.
- Surge Protection Only Outlets: Connect non-critical devices like printers or scanners to the outlets labeled "Surge Only" (4 outlets). These outlets provide surge protection but do not offer battery backup.
- USB Charger Ports: Use the two USB ports (one USB-C, one Type-A) on the front panel to charge mobile devices. These ports provide 15W shared power.
- Data Line Protection: Connect your network cable (Gigabit) and coaxial cables (Cable In/Out) to the respective ports on the rear for surge protection of data lines.

Operation
Understanding the features and controls of your UPS is key to maximizing its benefits.
- Power On/Off: Press the power button on the front panel to turn the UPS on or off. The LCD display will illuminate upon power-on.
- LCD Display: The LCD provides real-time information on the UPS status, including battery charge level, load percentage, input/output voltage, and estimated runtime. Use the display buttons to navigate through different information screens and adjust settings.
- Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR): The UPS automatically corrects minor voltage fluctuations (sags and surges) without using battery power, ensuring a stable power supply to connected devices.
- Alarms: The UPS emits audible alarms to indicate various conditions, such as on-battery operation, low battery, or overload. The mute button on the front panel can temporarily silence alarms.
- PowerChute Software: For advanced management and automatic shutdown capabilities, connect the UPS to your computer via the dedicated data port (USB cable included). Install the PowerChute software (available for Windows 10, 22H2 Pro, 11 Pro; Mac OS uses native "Energy Saver" settings) to monitor UPS status, configure settings, and ensure graceful system shutdown during extended power outages.

Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your UPS.
- Battery Replacement: The UPS features a user-replaceable battery. The typical lifespan of the sealed lead-acid battery is 3-5 years, depending on usage and environmental conditions. When the battery needs replacement, the UPS will indicate this on the LCD and/or via an alarm. Use only genuine APC replacement battery model APCRBC163 (sold separately) to ensure compatibility and performance. Refer to the battery replacement instructions provided with the replacement battery.
- Cleaning: Keep the UPS clean and free of dust. Use a dry cloth to wipe down the exterior. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents. Ensure ventilation openings are not obstructed.
- Storage: If storing the UPS for an extended period, ensure the battery is fully charged. Store in a cool, dry place with the battery disconnected. Recharge the battery every 3-6 months to prevent deep discharge and prolong its life.
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your UPS.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| UPS does not turn on. | Battery not connected or discharged. | Ensure the internal battery is properly connected. Plug the UPS into a wall outlet and allow it to charge for 24 hours. |
| UPS frequently switches to battery mode when connected to a generator. | Input frequency or voltage from the generator is outside the UPS's acceptable range. | Adjust the UPS sensitivity setting from "Medium" (default) to "Low" via the LCD menu. This allows for greater voltage distortions without transferring to battery operation. Be aware that this setting allows more power fluctuations to reach connected devices. |
| UPS emits continuous alarm. | Overload condition or low battery. | Reduce the load by unplugging non-essential devices. If the alarm persists, the battery may be low; allow it to recharge. If the battery is old, consider replacement. |
| No power to connected devices. | Circuit breaker tripped. | Check the circuit breaker button on the rear of the UPS. If it has popped out, push it back in to reset. Reduce the load if it trips again. |
