Cisco A900-IMA8S 8 Port SFP Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module

User Manual

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Cisco A900-IMA8S 8 Port SFP Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module. This module is designed to expand network connectivity by providing eight Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports, enabling flexible fiber optic or copper connectivity depending on the SFP transceivers used.

Safety Information

Observe the following safety precautions when handling and installing the module:

  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Prevention: Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap connected to a grounded surface when handling the module to prevent damage from static electricity.
  • Laser Safety: This product contains a Class 1 laser. Do not stare into the optical ports when the module is powered on, as this may cause eye damage.
  • Power Disconnection: Ensure the host device is powered off and disconnected from its power source before installing or removing the module.
  • Proper Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow around the host device to prevent overheating.

Setup

Follow these steps to properly install the Cisco A900-IMA8S module into a compatible Cisco ASR 900 Series Aggregation Services Router or similar chassis.

  1. Prepare the Chassis: Ensure the host router is powered off and unplugged from its power source. Locate an available interface module slot.
  2. Remove Blank Panel (if present): If a blank panel covers the slot, unscrew it and carefully remove it.
  3. Align the Module: Hold the A900-IMA8S module by its edges and align it with the guide rails of the empty slot.
  4. Insert the Module: Gently slide the module into the slot until it is fully seated. Apply even pressure to the front plate.
  5. Secure the Module: Tighten the captive screws on the module's faceplate to secure it firmly in the chassis.
  6. Install SFP Transceivers: Insert compatible SFP transceivers into the desired Gigabit Ethernet ports (GE-0 through GE-7). Ensure they click into place.
  7. Connect Cables: Attach the appropriate fiber optic or copper cables to the SFP transceivers.
  8. Power On: Reconnect the host router's power cable and power on the device.

Operating

Once installed and powered on, the A900-IMA8S module will initialize. Monitor the LED indicators on the module's faceplate to confirm proper operation:

  • PWR (Power) LED:
    • Solid Green: Module is powered on and operating normally.
    • Off: Module is not receiving power or is faulty.
  • STAT (Status) LED:
    • Solid Green: Module is functioning correctly and has passed diagnostics.
    • Blinking Green: Module is undergoing diagnostics or is in a transitional state.
    • Solid Amber: Module has detected a minor fault or warning.
    • Off: Module is not operational or has a major fault.
  • Port LEDs (per SFP port):
    • Solid Green: Link is established.
    • Blinking Green: Activity (data transmission/reception).
    • Off: No link or port is disabled.

Maintenance

The Cisco A900-IMA8S module requires minimal maintenance. Adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Keep the module's exterior clean and free of dust. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols directly on the module.
  • SFP Port Care: Keep SFP ports and transceivers clean. Use appropriate fiber optic cleaning tools for optical transceivers and cables. Always use dust caps when ports or transceivers are not in use.
  • Environmental Control: Ensure the operating environment maintains specified temperature and humidity levels to prevent component degradation.
  • Firmware Updates: Refer to Cisco's official documentation for the host router to determine if firmware updates for the module are available and necessary.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with the A900-IMA8S module, refer to the table below for common problems and their solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Module not detected by host router.Module not fully seated; power issue; faulty module.Ensure module is fully inserted and screws are tightened. Verify host router power. Reseat the module. If issue persists, contact support.
PWR LED is off.No power to host router; module not receiving power.Check host router power supply and connections. Reseat the module.
STAT LED is amber or off.Module fault; diagnostics failed.Check host router logs for error messages. Reseat the module. If issue persists, the module may be faulty.
No link on a specific port.Incorrect SFP transceiver; faulty cable; remote device issue; port disabled.Verify SFP transceiver compatibility. Check cable integrity. Ensure remote device is powered on and configured correctly. Check host router configuration to ensure port is enabled.
