5. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your amplifier. Follow these steps carefully.
5.1 Mounting Location
Select a mounting location that is:
- Secure and stable, away from moving parts.
- Well-ventilated to allow for heat dissipation.
- Protected from direct sunlight, excessive moisture, and extreme temperatures.
- Accessible for wiring and adjustments.
Due to its compact size, suitable locations include under seats, inside dashboards, or in motorcycle saddlebags.
5.2 Wiring Connections
Ensure all connections are tight and secure to prevent intermittent operation or damage.
- Power (BATT+): Connect a fused power cable directly from the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery to the +V terminal on the amplifier. The fuse should be located within 18 inches (45 cm) of the battery.
- Ground (GND): Connect a ground cable of the same gauge as the power cable from the GND terminal on the amplifier to a clean, unpainted metal surface of the vehicle chassis. Ensure a good electrical connection.
- Remote (REM): Connect a remote turn-on wire from your head unit's remote output to the REM terminal on the amplifier. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with your head unit.
- RCA Inputs: Connect RCA cables from your head unit's pre-amp outputs to the CH1/2 and CH3/4 RCA input jacks on the amplifier.
- Speaker Outputs: Connect your speakers to the CH1, CH2, CH3, and CH4 speaker output terminals. Observe correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). For bridged operation, refer to the specific bridging instructions provided with your amplifier or consult a professional.
Note: The SounDigital 800.4 EVO 4.0 is a 4-ohm amplifier. Ensure your speakers' impedance matches the amplifier's requirements for optimal performance and to prevent damage.
6. Operating Instructions
Once installed, the amplifier requires initial setup and adjustment for optimal sound quality.
6.1 Gain Adjustment
The gain control matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to the output level of your head unit. It is not a volume control.
- Turn the amplifier's gain controls to their minimum (fully counter-clockwise) position.
- Set your head unit's volume to about 75% of its maximum level.
- Slowly increase the amplifier's gain control until you hear slight distortion, then back it off slightly until the sound is clear.
- Repeat for both channel pairs (CH1/2 and CH3/4).
6.2 Crossover Settings
The built-in crossovers allow you to filter frequencies, directing specific ranges to your speakers for improved sound quality and speaker protection.
- Full Range (FLAT): Passes all frequencies. Use for full-range speakers or if your head unit handles crossovers.
- High-Pass Filter (HPF): Blocks frequencies below the set point. Use for tweeters or mid-range speakers to prevent them from playing low bass. Adjust the HPF knob to the desired cutoff frequency.
- Low-Pass Filter (LPF): Blocks frequencies above the set point. Use for subwoofers to prevent them from playing high frequencies. Adjust the LPF knob to the desired cutoff frequency.
Experiment with crossover settings to achieve the best sound balance for your specific speaker setup.
7. Maintenance
The SounDigital 800.4 EVO 4.0 amplifier requires minimal maintenance to ensure long-term performance.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the amplifier's heatsink fins are free from dust and debris to maintain proper airflow and cooling.
- Connections: Occasionally check all wiring connections for tightness and corrosion. Loose connections can lead to poor performance or damage.
