This guide provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your appliance. Please read these instructions carefully before first use and keep them for future reference.

Important Safety Instructions
To prevent injury or damage, always follow basic safety precautions when using electrical appliances. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Read all instructions before use.
- Do not immerse the appliance, power cord, or plug in water or other liquids.
- Keep the appliance out of reach of children.
- Unplug from the outlet when not in use and before cleaning.
- Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug, or after the appliance malfunctions or has been damaged in any manner.
- Use only Nespresso Original capsules.
- Do not open the capsule lever during brewing.
- The appliance is not dishwasher safe.
Setup and First Use
Follow these steps to set up your coffee machine for the first time:
- Unpacking: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Ensure all parts are present: the machine, water tank, drip tray, capsule container, and any included documentation or welcome pack.
- Positioning: Place the machine on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface, away from water splashes and heat sources.
- Water Tank: Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water. Ensure the tank is properly seated on the machine.
- Power Connection: Plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
- First Rinse:
- Press either the Espresso or Lungo button to turn the machine on. The buttons will blink while heating up (approx. 25 seconds).
- Place a container (at least 0.5L) under the coffee outlet.
- Press the Lungo button. Repeat this process three times to rinse the machine thoroughly.
- The machine is now ready for use.

Operating Instructions
Your CitiZ M196 machine is designed for easy preparation of Espresso and Lungo coffees.
- Power On: Press either the Espresso or Lungo button to turn on the machine. The buttons will blink during the preheating phase and become steady when ready (approx. 25 seconds).
- Fill Water Tank: Ensure the water tank is filled with fresh drinking water.
- Insert Capsule: Lift the lever completely, insert a Nespresso Original capsule, and close the lever.
- Place Cup: Place a cup under the coffee outlet. For larger cups, the drip tray can be folded up or removed.
- Brew Coffee:
- Press the Espresso button for a small cup (approx. 40 ml).
- Press the Lungo button for a larger cup (approx. 110 ml).
- Eject Capsule: Lift the lever to eject the used capsule into the internal container. Close the lever.
- Power Off: The machine will automatically switch off after 9 minutes of inactivity to save energy. You can manually turn it off by pressing both Espresso and Lungo buttons simultaneously.

Programming Cup Volume
You can customize the volume for your Espresso and Lungo buttons:
- Turn the machine on and wait for the buttons to become steady.
- Insert a Nespresso Original capsule.
- Press and hold the button you wish to program (Espresso or Lungo). Release the button when your desired volume is reached. The machine will remember this setting for future use.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Regular cleaning and maintenance ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your CitiZ M196 machine.
Daily Cleaning
- Drip Tray and Capsule Container: Empty and rinse the drip tray and used capsule container daily with warm water. Dry thoroughly.
- Water Tank: Empty and rinse the water tank daily. Refill with fresh drinking water.
- Machine Exterior: Wipe the machine's exterior with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaning agents or immerse the machine in water.
Descaling
Descaling is crucial for removing mineral deposits and maintaining coffee quality. The frequency depends on water hardness and usage. It is recommended to descale every 3-6 months.
- Preparation: Ensure the machine is empty of capsules and the used capsule container and drip tray are clean and re-inserted. Place a large container (at least 1L) under the coffee outlet.
- Descaling Solution: Fill the water tank with 0.5L of Nespresso descaling solution and 0.5L of water.
- Enter Descaling Mode: Turn the machine off. Press and hold both Espresso and Lungo buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to enter descaling mode. The buttons will blink rapidly.
- Start Descaling: Press the Lungo button to start the descaling cycle. The machine will run the solution through.
- Rinse Cycle: Once the tank is empty, rinse the water tank thoroughly and fill it with fresh water. Press the Lungo button again to start the rinsing cycle.
- Exit Descaling Mode: Once the rinsing cycle is complete, press and hold both Espresso and Lungo buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to exit descaling mode.
Always use Nespresso-approved descaling solutions to avoid damage to the machine.
