5. Data Protection and RAID
The LinkStation 220 is designed to keep your data safe. It features a closed system to reduce vulnerabilities from third-party applications and uses SSL encryption for secure file transfers.
5.1 RAID Configuration
The 12TB LinkStation 220 ships in RAID 1 configuration, providing automatic data mirroring for redundancy and a usable capacity of 6TB. You can reconfigure it to RAID 0 to utilize the full 12TB capacity, though this will remove data redundancy.
- RAID 1 (Mirroring): Data is written identically to both hard drives. If one drive fails, your data is still accessible from the other drive. This provides data protection at the cost of half the total storage capacity.
- RAID 0 (Striping): Data is split and written across both hard drives. This maximizes storage capacity and can improve performance but offers no data redundancy. If one drive fails, all data is lost.

6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your LinkStation 220.
- Firmware Updates: Periodically check the BUFFALO support website for firmware updates. Keeping your firmware current ensures the latest features, security patches, and performance improvements.
- Data Backup Strategy: While RAID 1 provides redundancy, it is not a substitute for a comprehensive backup strategy. Regularly back up critical data from your LinkStation to another external drive or cloud service.
- Physical Environment: Ensure the LinkStation is placed in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive dust.
- Cleanliness: Gently clean the exterior of the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
- Power Management: Utilize the power management schedule features to power down the device during off-peak hours to conserve energy and extend component life.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your LinkStation 220, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps. For more detailed guidance, consult the official Troubleshooting Guide (PDF) available on the BUFFALO support website.
