5. Installation Guide

Follow these steps carefully for proper installation of your Armordillo CR-M Chase Rack. Drilling is required for this installation.

5.1. Pre-Installation

  1. Unpack and Inspect: Carefully unpack all components and hardware. Verify that all parts listed in Section 2 are present and undamaged. Lay out parts on a protected surface to prevent damage to the finish.
  2. Prepare Driver Side Panel: Prep the driver side panel and middle section for hardware installation. Connect the driver side panel and middle section using one M10x25mm button head bolt and one M10 washer through the hole on the driver side panel, attaching it to the middle section panel with one M10 washer, one M10 lock washer, and one M10 hex nut. Repeat this process for the top and bottom mounting points. Tighten all three bolts using a 3/16" Allen wrench and a 13mm ratchet.
  3. Prepare Passenger Side Panel: Repeat the previous steps to connect the passenger side panel and passenger mid section. Ensure the holes on the adjustable mid section are facing down during installation. Attach the passenger side to the adjustable mid section and driver side panel with two M10x20mm button head bolts and two M10 washers on the top. Hand tight only.

5.2. Mounting to Truck Bed

  1. Position the Rack: Carefully place the assembled chase rack onto the bed of the truck and adjust it to the desired position.
  2. Mark Mounting Points: Locate and mark the four mount points on each side of the bed. Ensure the mount points on each side of the bed cap are not interfering with anything underneath. Remove the bed cap to confirm if necessary. After confirming, mark the points. Three mount points are sufficient if a pocket hole is compromised.
  3. Remove Rack: Carefully remove the assembled chase rack from the truck bed.
  4. Drill Holes: Use a 3/16" drill bit to start a pilot hole at each marked point. Gradually widen the holes using a 7/16" drill bit.
  5. Install Nutserts: Check to ensure the nutsert/rivet nut fits into the hole. It is recommended to trim the hole to allow the nutsert/rivet nut to sit flush with the bed before expanding it into place. Thread a nut into the nutsert/rivet tool until it's flushed. Insert it into the existing hole, ensuring it's seated all the way down. Close the handles firmly to expand the nutsert. Open the handles and turn the knob to release the bolt.
  6. Final Placement and Securing: Carefully place the assembled chase rack back onto the bed of the truck, aligning it with the drilled holes. Attach the chase rack with the supplied hardware (six M10x35mm hex button bolts, six M10 lock washers, six M10 washers). Tighten hardware to 50 ft. lbs.
  7. Align and Tighten Mid Section: Finally, align and tighten the adjustable mid section.

5.3. Installation Videos

The following videos provide general guidance on roll bar installation techniques, including drilling and nutsert application. While not specific to the CR-M model, the principles demonstrated are applicable.

6. Operating Instructions

The Armordillo CR-M Chase Rack includes provisions for lighting accessories.

6.1. Third Brake Light

The integrated third brake light is designed to connect to your vehicle's existing brake light wiring system. Consult a professional for wiring if you are unfamiliar with automotive electrical systems.

6.2. Auxiliary Lights

The four auxiliary mounting tabs are designed to accommodate aftermarket 5-inch round lights or 50-inch LED light bars (sold separately). Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific lighting accessories for wiring and mounting. Ensure all wiring is properly secured and protected from the elements.

7. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and appearance of your Armordillo CR-M Chase Rack, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Regular Cleaning: Wash the chase rack regularly with mild soap and water to remove dirt, grime, and road salt. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that can damage the powder coat finish.
  • Inspect Hardware: Periodically check all bolts, nuts, and mounting points for tightness. Re-tighten any loose hardware to the recommended torque specifications (50 ft. lbs. for main mounting hardware).
  • Inspect Finish: Examine the powder coat finish for any signs of chips, scratches, or rust. Touch up any damaged areas promptly to prevent further corrosion.
  • Electrical Connections: If auxiliary lights are installed, periodically inspect all electrical connections for corrosion or damage. Ensure wiring is securely fastened and insulated.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues with your Armordillo CR-M Chase Rack, consider the following:

8.1. Loose Rack

If the chase rack feels loose or unstable, re-check all mounting hardware. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the specified torque (50 ft. lbs.). Inspect the nutsert installations to confirm they are fully expanded and secure.

8.2. Lights Not Functioning

If the integrated third brake light or auxiliary lights are not working:

  • Check all wiring connections for proper contact and insulation.
  • Verify that the lights themselves are not damaged or have burnt-out bulbs/LEDs.
  • Check the vehicle's fuse box for any blown fuses related to the lighting circuit.
  • Ensure proper grounding for all electrical components.

If troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, consult a qualified automotive technician.
