Setup

  1. Check Compatibility: Ensure your acoustic guitar has a soundhole diameter between 3.8 inches (96.6mm) and 3.94 inches (102mm). This pickup is designed for 6-string acoustic guitars.
  2. Install Battery: The DSS-6A is an active pickup and requires a 9V battery. Locate the battery compartment (often a small pouch with Velcro) and insert the provided 9V battery. Secure the compartment inside the guitar body, typically near the neck block or tail block, using the adhesive-backed Velcro pad if desired.
  3. Position Pickup: Gently loosen your guitar strings to create space. Slide the pickup into the soundhole, positioning it directly under the strings. The pickup should sit snugly but without excessive force.
  4. Secure Pickup: The pickup features clamps on either side. Tighten these clamps to secure the pickup firmly in place within the soundhole. Ensure it is stable and does not obstruct string movement.
  5. Connect Microphone: The small gold-colored plug is for the internal microphone. Connect this to the designated input on the pickup unit. Position the microphone to point towards the guitar's bridge for optimal sound capture.
  6. Route Cables: Route the output cable from the pickup unit out of the soundhole. Use the provided cable clips to secure the cable along the guitar's body or strap button to prevent it from interfering with playing.
  7. Connect to Amplifier: Plug the 6.35mm jack into your amplifier or audio interface.

Operating

Adjustable Pole Pieces

The DSS-6A features six adjustable pole pieces, one for each string. Use the provided adjustment tool to raise or lower individual pole pieces. This allows you to fine-tune the output level of each string, achieving a balanced sound across all strings and customizing your tone.

Microphone Pickup

The integrated microphone captures the natural acoustic resonance and subtle nuances of your guitar, such as overtones and percussive elements. This complements the magnetic pickup's sound, providing a richer and more authentic amplified tone. Ensure the microphone is positioned correctly inside the soundhole, pointing towards the guitar's body.

Volume and Tone Control

The pickup unit includes accessible volume and tone controls. These allow for easy adjustment of your amplified sound to achieve the desired string balance and overall effect. Adjust these controls as needed to suit your playing style and the acoustic environment.

Maintenance

  • Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V battery when the sound becomes weak or distorted. Always use a fresh alkaline 9V battery for optimal performance.
  • Cleaning: Wipe the pickup's mahogany housing and pole pieces with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and grime. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, it is recommended to remove the 9V battery to prevent leakage and potential damage to the unit.

Troubleshooting

  • No Sound:
    • Check if the 9V battery is correctly installed and has sufficient charge.
    • Ensure all cables are securely connected between the pickup, microphone, and amplifier.
    • Verify that the amplifier is powered on and its volume is turned up.
  • Weak or Distorted Sound:
    • Replace the 9V battery with a new one.
    • Adjust the volume and tone controls on the pickup and amplifier.
    • Check the adjustable pole pieces to ensure they are set correctly for each string.
  • Feedback Issues:
    • Reduce the overall volume of your amplifier.
    • Adjust the tone controls to cut problematic frequencies.
    • Consider using a feedback suppressor or soundhole cover, especially in loud environments.
  • Pickup Does Not Fit Soundhole:
    • Confirm your guitar's soundhole diameter is within the specified range (3.8" to 3.94"). This pickup is not compatible with smaller 3/4 size acoustic guitars.
