Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install the J-bar Kayak Roof Rack onto your vehicle's crossbars.

  1. Prepare Crossbars: Ensure your vehicle's crossbars are clean and free of debris. The OUHOUG J-bar rack is designed to fit most round, square, oval, and flat crossbars.
  2. Attach Mounting Plates: Select the appropriate mounting plates for your crossbar type. Position one J-bar frame on each crossbar, ensuring they are spaced adequately to support your kayak.
  3. Secure J-bars: Place the bottom mounting plate under the crossbar and align it with the bolts extending from the J-bar frame. Securely fasten using the provided washers and star knobs. Tighten the knobs firmly by hand until the J-bar is stable and does not wobble.
  4. Verify Stability: Gently shake each installed J-bar to confirm it is securely attached to the crossbar. Re-tighten if any movement is detected.

Operating Instructions

Once the J-bar racks are securely installed, follow these steps to safely load and transport your watercraft.

  1. Position Watercraft: Carefully lift your kayak, canoe, or SUP and place it into the J-cradles of the racks. Ensure the watercraft is centered and balanced on both J-bars.
  2. Secure with Straps: Use the provided ratchet straps to secure the watercraft to the J-bars. Thread the straps over the watercraft and through the J-bar openings, then tighten the ratchet mechanism until the watercraft is firmly held in place. Ensure straps are not twisted and are free from sharp edges.
  3. Attach Bow and Stern Lines: For added security, especially during highway travel, attach the bow and stern tie-down ropes. Connect one end of each rope to the front and rear of your watercraft, and the other end to a secure anchor point on your vehicle (e.g., tow hooks, frame loops). Tighten these ropes to prevent fore-aft movement and uplift.
  4. Pre-Travel Check: Before driving, double-check all straps and ropes for tightness. Ensure there is no excessive slack and that the watercraft is stable. Periodically check tightness during long journeys.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance will extend the life of your OUHOUG J-bar Kayak Roof Rack and ensure continued safe operation.

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially after exposure to saltwater or dirt, clean the J-bars and straps with mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry.
  • Inspect Hardware: Periodically inspect all bolts, nuts, and knobs for tightness. Re-tighten as necessary. Check for any signs of wear, corrosion, or damage on the metal components and straps.
  • Foam Padding: Inspect the foam padding for tears or excessive wear. While durable, severe damage may reduce protection for your watercraft.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the rack in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight to prevent material degradation.
