4. Installation Guide
4.1 Preparation
- Shut Off Main Water Supply: Locate and turn off the home's main water supply. If unsure, contact your local water company.
- Drain Water Lines: Turn on a faucet at the lowest point in the home to drain the water lines.
- Locate/Create Access Panel: For remodel projects, locate the plumbing access panel behind the valve. If none exists, an opening will need to be created.
4.2 Installing the M-CORE Tub/Shower Valve
The Moen M-CORE valve features both threaded and soldered connections, making it adaptable to various plumbing types (Copper, IPS, Crimp PEX, Cold PEX, CPVC 4-Port). This guide demonstrates a copper-to-copper installation.
Valve Positioning: The plaster ground (4-inch diameter) is used to position the valve. For thick walls (more than 1/4 inch thick), the plaster ground should be flush with the finished wall.
Valve Height: For optimal placement, the center of the tub/shower valve should be positioned 32 inches from the floor of the tub.
Connecting Tubing:
- Measure the distance between the top of the tub drop outlet's threads on the valve and the existing tub drop outlet.
- Cut the appropriate length of 1/2" copper tubing.
- Insert the new copper tubing into the tub drop outlet on the valve.
- Repeat for hot water inlet, cold water inlet, and shower riser outlet. Use 1/2" copper slip couplings for added flexibility when connecting remaining tubes.
Soldering: Once all connections are in place, each will need to be soldered.
Securing the Valve: Screw the valve to the cross member from the front of the wall for added support using the integrated mounting bracket.
This video demonstrates the installation process for the Moen M-CORE Tub/Shower Valve and 3-Series Trim, including preparation, tool requirements, and connecting the valve to existing plumbing. It highlights the adaptability of the M-CORE valve to various plumbing types and the importance of proper valve positioning and soldering.
4.3 Flushing the System & Checking for Leaks
- M-CORE valves come pre-installed with a flush plug.
- Turn on the main water supply.
- Let water run from the tub outlet for 15 seconds to remove any debris.
- Check for any leaks at all connections.
- Turn the water off.
4.4 Installing the M-CORE 3-Series Cartridge
- Remove the plug nut and pull out the flush plug by hand.
- Align the tab on the check adapter with the hole inside the valve body.
- Using the provided installation sleeve, install the adapter and pressure balancing puck assembly.
- Align the two posts on the back of the cartridge assembly with the pressure balancing assembly.
- Thread on the cartridge nut (included with the trim kit) by hand, then snug with a wrench.
4.5 Installing the 3-Series Trim: Shower Device & Tub Spout
- Shower Arm: Wrap thread seal tape clockwise around both ends of the shower arm. Apply plumber's putty to the back of the flange. Slide the flange onto the appropriate end of the shower arm. Thread the shower arm through the opening in the wall and push the flange flush to the wall. Screw on the showerhead and tighten with an adjustable wrench.
- Tub Spout: Ensure the pipe extends a 2-inch minimum to 2.5-inch maximum distance from the wall to accommodate the spout. Slide the inverted tub spout onto the pipe. Lightly tighten the screw with a 5/32" hex wrench. Rotate the tub spout into the upright position. Fully tighten the spout with a 5/32" hex wrench.
4.6 Setting Adjustable Temperature Limit Stop
- The M-CORE valve includes an adjustable temperature limit stop to meet applicable temperature code requirements.
- To Test Temperature: Hold the lever handle in the 6 o'clock position. Lift and turn the handle clockwise until it stops. Turn on the water supply and check the temperature.
- To Reset Limit Stop (if temperature exceeds 120°F): Turn the handle to lower the water temperature to 120°F. Remove the handle. Remove the temperature limit stop ring located on the outer rim of the cartridge stem. Turn the limit stop ring counter-clockwise until the tab on the ring lines up with the corresponding tab on the cartridge. Reinsert the limit stop at the desired hot position. Place the handle back on, close the handle, and rotate it to the 6 o'clock position. Remove the handle.
4.7 Installing 3-Series Trim
- Install the decorative sleeve.
- Align the mounting plate and snap ring in the proper position.
- Once the snap ring is centered on the sleeve, secure it to the valve using the two included screws.
- Snap on the escutcheon plate.
- Place the handle on the cartridge stem and secure it with the set screw.
5. Operating Instructions
The Moen UT35503EPBN features a single handle for both temperature and volume control.
- Temperature Control: Rotate the handle left for hotter water and right for colder water. The adjustable temperature limit stop prevents excessively hot water.
- Volume Control: Lift the handle to increase water flow and push down to decrease or stop water flow.
- Diverter: Pull the knob on the tub spout to divert water flow from the tub spout to the showerhead. Push it back down to return water flow to the tub spout.
6. Care and Maintenance
- Cleaning: Clean the trim kit regularly with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, or scouring pads, as these can damage the Brushed Nickel finish.
- Cartridge Maintenance: The M-CORE cartridge is designed for durability. If you experience issues with water flow or temperature control, the cartridge may need inspection or replacement. Refer to the detailed instructions for cartridge removal and installation.
- Leak Checks: Periodically check for leaks around the valve and connections. Address any leaks promptly to prevent water damage.
7. Troubleshooting
7.1 No Water Flow or Low Pressure
- Check if the main water supply is fully open.
- Ensure the cartridge is correctly installed and not obstructed.
- Inspect water lines for kinks or blockages.
7.2 Inconsistent Water Temperature
- Verify the adjustable temperature limit stop is set correctly (refer to Section 4.6).
- Ensure the M-CORE valve's pressure-balancing capabilities are functioning.
- Check hot and cold water supply lines for adequate pressure.
7.3 Leaks
- Tighten all connections, ensuring not to overtighten.
- Inspect thread seal tape application on threaded connections.
- Check the cartridge for proper seating and any damage.
