2. Safety Information

Always adhere to the following safety precautions:

  • Do not paint the smoke detector. Paint can clog the sensing chambers and prevent the alarm from operating correctly.
  • Do not install in areas with high humidity, extreme temperatures, or excessive dust.
  • Test the smoke detector regularly (at least once a month) to ensure proper functionality.
  • Never ignore a smoke alarm. Investigate the cause of the alarm immediately.
  • Keep the detector clean from dust and debris.
  • This device is designed for indoor use only.

3. Package Contents

The ELRO FS1805 package typically includes:

  • ELRO FS1805M Smoke Detector(s)
  • Magnetic Mounting Kit(s)
  • Mounting Screws and Wall Plugs (optional for non-magnetic installation)
  • 9V Battery(ies) (pre-installed or included for 5-year life)

4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Choosing a Location

Install smoke detectors in all sleeping areas and on every level of your home, including the basement. For best protection, install a smoke detector in every room (except the kitchen and bathroom due to steam/smoke). Mount the detector on the ceiling, at least 50 cm (20 inches) from any wall.

4.3 Mounting Options

You have two primary options for mounting your ELRO FS1805M smoke detector:

4.3.1 Magnetic Mounting (Recommended for easy installation)

  1. Clean the ceiling surface where you intend to install the detector. Ensure it is dry and free of dust.
  2. Peel off the protective film from one side of the magnetic mounting pad.
  3. Firmly press the adhesive side of the magnetic pad onto the ceiling. Hold for a few seconds to ensure good adhesion.
  4. Align the smoke detector with the magnetic pad on the ceiling. The detector will snap into place due to the magnetic attraction.

4.3.2 Screw Mounting (For permanent installation)

  1. Use the mounting bracket as a template to mark the positions for drilling two holes on the ceiling.
  2. Drill the holes and insert the wall plugs.
  3. Attach the mounting bracket to the ceiling using the provided screws.
  4. Twist the smoke detector onto the mounting bracket until it clicks securely into place.

5. Operating the Smoke Detector

5.1 Normal Operation

Once installed and activated, the smoke detector is continuously monitoring for smoke. A small LED indicator light will flash periodically (e.g., every 40-60 seconds) to confirm that the unit is functioning correctly.

5.2 Testing the Alarm

It is crucial to test your smoke detector at least once a month to ensure it is working properly. To test:

  1. Press and hold the test button located on the center of the detector.
  2. The alarm will sound loudly (85dB) and the LED will flash rapidly.
  3. Release the button. The alarm should stop.
  4. If the alarm does not sound during the test, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

5.3 Alarm Signal

When smoke is detected, the alarm will emit a loud, continuous siren (85dB) and the LED indicator will flash rapidly. If the alarm sounds, evacuate the premises immediately and call emergency services.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Regular Cleaning

Dust and debris can accumulate in the smoke detector's sensing chamber, potentially causing false alarms or preventing it from functioning correctly. Clean your smoke detector at least once every six months:

  • Gently vacuum the exterior of the detector using a soft brush attachment.
  • Wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth. Do not use cleaning sprays or solvents.

6.2 Battery Replacement

The ELRO FS1805M is equipped with a long-life 9V battery designed to last for 5 years. When the battery is nearing the end of its life, the detector will emit a short "chirp" sound approximately every 30-40 seconds. This indicates that the battery needs to be replaced.

  1. Remove the smoke detector from its mounting base (either by detaching from the magnetic pad or twisting off the screw mount).
  2. Open the battery compartment.
  3. Remove the old 9V battery and dispose of it according to local regulations.
  4. Insert a new 9V alkaline battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  5. Close the battery compartment and reattach the detector to its mounting base.
  6. Test the alarm immediately after replacing the battery.

7. Troubleshooting
