Safety Instructions
Always prioritize safety when operating power tools. Read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before using the HMS860 Planer. Keep this manual for future reference.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and dust mask.
- Ensure the work area is clean, well-lit, and free from obstructions.
- Never operate the planer with damaged parts or without all guards in place.
- Disconnect the power supply before making any adjustments, changing blades, or performing maintenance.
- Keep hands and fingers away from the cutting area and moving parts.
- Securely fasten the workpiece before planing to prevent kickback.
- Do not force the tool; let the planer do the work at its intended speed.
Setup and Assembly
Before initial use, ensure all components are present and properly assembled according to the following steps.
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the planer and all accessories from the packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage.
- Placement: Position the planer on a stable, level workbench or stand. The rubber feet will help dampen vibrations. Ensure adequate space around the machine for safe operation and material handling.
- Dust Extraction Connection: Attach a suitable dust extraction system to the dust port. Proper dust collection is crucial for safety and machine longevity.
- Fence Assembly: Install the planing fence, ensuring it is securely fastened and can be adjusted for angle (0-45°). The HMS860 features a stable aluminum fence for improved precision compared to conventional designs.
- Power Connection: Connect the planer to a suitable 240V power supply. Ensure the power switch is in the "OFF" position before plugging in.

Operating Instructions
The HMS860 Planer can function as both a surfacing planer and a thicknessing planer. Understanding the transition between these modes is key to its operation.
Switching Between Planing Modes (2-in-1 Function)
The HMS860 offers a convenient 2-in-1 function, allowing easy conversion between thicknessing and surfacing operations. Refer to the machine's specific levers and locks for this transition.

Figure 4: Diagram illustrating the 2-in-1 functionality, showing how the machine can be configured for both thicknessing and surfacing operations.
Surfacing (Jointing) Operation
- Ensure the machine is configured for surfacing.
- Adjust the infeed table to the desired cutting depth (maximum 2mm).
- Set the planing fence to the required angle (typically 90° for square edges).
- Turn on the planer.
- Feed the workpiece smoothly and consistently across the cutterhead, keeping it firmly against the fence and table.
Thicknessing Operation
- Ensure the machine is configured for thicknessing.
- Use the hand crank to adjust the thicknessing table to the desired final thickness of the workpiece.
- Turn on the planer.
- Feed the workpiece into the infeed rollers. The machine will automatically pull the wood through and plane it to the set thickness.
- For best results, take multiple shallow passes rather than one deep pass, especially with hard woods.

Applications
The HMS860 is suitable for planing various types of wood, including solid wood and soft wood, to achieve desired dimensions and smooth surfaces.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your HMS860 Planer. Always disconnect power before maintenance.
- Cleaning: After each use, clean the machine thoroughly, removing all wood chips and dust from the tables, cutterhead area, and dust port. Use compressed air or a brush.
- Blade Inspection: Regularly inspect the planer knives for sharpness and damage. Dull or chipped blades can lead to poor planing quality and increased motor strain. Replace both knives simultaneously if needed.
- Lubrication: Periodically lubricate moving parts, such as the height adjustment mechanism and feed rollers, according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
- Table Waxing: Apply a thin coat of paste wax to the planer tables to reduce friction and prevent rust.
- Belt Inspection: Check the drive belts for wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Machine does not start | No power supply; Safety switch engaged; Overload protector tripped. | Check power connection; Ensure all guards are in place; Reset overload button. |
| Poor planing quality (rough surface, tear-out) | Dull or damaged knives; Incorrect feed rate; Wood grain direction. | Replace knives; Adjust feed rate; Plane with the grain. |
| Wood not feeding through | Feed rollers dirty or worn; Excessive depth of cut. | Clean or replace feed rollers; Reduce depth of cut. |
| Excessive vibration or noise | Loose components; Unbalanced knives; Worn bearings. | Check and tighten all fasteners; Ensure knives are correctly installed and balanced; Contact service if bearings are suspected. |
