Setup and Installation
Installing the M27BS cartridge is a straightforward process, but requires careful handling to avoid damage to the stylus or cartridge body. If you require assistance, please contact the seller for fitting advice.
- Preparation: Ensure your turntable is powered off and unplugged. Carefully remove any existing cartridge from the tonearm headshell.
- Wiring: Connect the four color-coded wires from your tonearm to the corresponding pins on the back of the M27BS cartridge. Typically:
- Red: Right Channel Signal
- Green: Right Channel Ground
- White: Left Channel Signal
- Blue: Left Channel Ground
- Mounting: Secure the cartridge to the headshell using the provided screws. Do not overtighten. Ensure the cartridge is aligned correctly within the headshell slots.
- Tracking Force Adjustment: Set the tracking force on your tonearm to 3.0 grams. The acceptable range is 2.5 to 3.5 grams. Refer to your turntable's manual for specific instructions on adjusting tracking force and anti-skate.
- Alignment: For optimal sound quality and to minimize record wear, proper cartridge alignment (overhang and azimuth) is crucial. Use a protractor if available, or follow your turntable's specific alignment instructions.
Operating Instructions
Once installed and properly adjusted, your MAG M27BS cartridge is ready for use. Follow these guidelines for optimal performance:
- Stylus Protection: Always use the stylus protector when the turntable is not in use or when handling the tonearm to prevent accidental damage to the delicate diamond tip.
- Gentle Handling: Lower the tonearm gently onto the record using the cueing lever. Avoid dropping the tonearm or dragging the stylus across the record surface.
- Clean Records: Ensure your records are clean and free of dust and debris before playback. A dirty record can degrade sound quality and accelerate stylus wear.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance will help preserve the sound quality and extend the life of your cartridge and stylus.
- Stylus Cleaning: Gently clean the stylus tip regularly using a soft stylus brush, moving from back to front (never side-to-side or front-to-back). Use a dedicated stylus cleaning fluid sparingly if necessary.
- Cartridge Body: Keep the cartridge body free of dust. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe it clean.
- Stylus Replacement: The diamond stylus will wear down over time. Replace the stylus when you notice a degradation in sound quality or after approximately 500-1000 hours of playback, depending on record condition and tracking force.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your M27BS cartridge, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:
- No Sound or Weak Sound:
- Check all wiring connections between the cartridge, tonearm, and amplifier/phono preamp. Ensure they are secure and correctly matched (Left/Right, Signal/Ground).
- Verify that your amplifier is set to the correct input (Phono).
- Distorted Sound or Skipping:
- Re-check the tracking force. Ensure it is set to 3.0g (within 2.5-3.5g).
- Verify the anti-skate setting on your tonearm.
- Inspect the stylus tip for dirt or damage. Clean if necessary.
- Ensure the cartridge is properly aligned in the headshell.
- Check if the record itself is clean and free of scratches or warps.
- Humming Noise:
- Ensure all ground wires are properly connected, including the turntable's ground wire to your amplifier/phono preamp.
- Check for interference from other electronic devices.
If problems persist, consult a qualified audio technician or contact the seller for further assistance.
