2. Setup
2.1. Battery Installation and Charging
The Sunslinger Feeder Kit requires a 6V spring-top battery (sold separately) for operation. It is crucial to fully charge the battery before initial use, as new batteries are typically completely discharged. A 110V charger designed for 6V batteries (also sold separately) is recommended for this purpose.
- Charging: Connect the 6V spring-top battery to the 110V charger. Charging typically takes 5 to 8 hours. The charger features a light indicator to signal when the battery is fully charged.
- Installation: Open the battery compartment located near the solar panel. The battery can be inserted in either orientation due to its design (negative and positive terminals are configured for flexible insertion). Ensure the battery is fully seated within the compartment for proper connection.

2.2. Mounting the Feeder Kit
The Sunslinger Feeder Kit is designed for easy installation on various feeder barrels, compatible with both twist-lock and flat-mount hoppers. It features a built-in metal varmint guard to protect the spin plate from interference.
- Attachment: Securely attach the feeder kit to the bottom of your feeder barrel using the provided twist-locks or by bolting it directly for a permanent setup.
- Solar Panel Orientation: Position the feeder so that the integrated solar panel receives maximum direct sunlight throughout the day. This ensures continuous charging of the 6V battery and optimal performance.
- Varmint Protection: The integrated metal varmint guard helps deter pests. An optional shocking circuit can be added for enhanced protection (not included).
Note: Some users have found that the solar panel might be obscured if the feeder hole is perfectly centered on a barrel. It may be necessary to offset the feeder slightly to ensure the solar panel is exposed to sunlight. Additional hardware might be required for certain barrel setups. The provided videos also demonstrate the mounting process on a barrel.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1. Digital Timer Programming
The Sunslinger features a user-friendly digital timer with a large LCD display for easy programming of feeding schedules.
- Setting Time and Date: Use the navigation buttons to set the current time and day of the week.
- Custom Feed Times: Program up to 16 custom feeding times per day. You can specify the exact time and duration for each feed cycle.
- Adjustable Feed Rate: The feed duration can be adjusted from 1 to 60 seconds, allowing you to control the amount of feed dispensed.
- Q-Sets: Utilize the two pre-configured Q-Set settings for quick setup if they meet your feeding requirements.
- Test Function: A test function is available to verify the spin plate operation and feed distribution.
3.2. Advanced Features
- Reverse Polarity Protection: This feature protects the unit from damage if the battery is connected incorrectly.
- Jam Protection: The industrial-grade motor is designed with jam protection to prevent blockages and ensure consistent feeding.
- Optional Remote Activator: A remote activator can be added for additional control over feeding schedules (sold separately).
- Adjustable Spin Plate Clearance: The distance between the metal spin plate and the feeder opening can be adjusted to accommodate different feed sizes (e.g., corn, pellets). This ensures proper dispensing and prevents clogging.
4. Maintenance
- Battery Maintenance: Regularly check the battery charge level, especially during periods of low sunlight. Recharge the battery as needed using the recommended charger.
- Cleaning: Periodically clean the spin plate, varmint cage, and the interior of the feeder to prevent buildup of feed residue, which can lead to jams or attract pests. Use a damp cloth for the exterior and ensure all components are dry before reassembly.
- Solar Panel Cleaning: Keep the solar panel free of dirt, dust, and debris to ensure efficient charging. Wipe it gently with a soft, damp cloth.
- Seasonal Storage: If storing the feeder for an extended period, remove the battery, clean the unit thoroughly, and store it in a dry, protected area.
5. Troubleshooting
- Feeder Not Dispensing:
- Check battery charge.
- Verify programming settings (time, duration).
- Inspect the spin plate and motor for any obstructions or jams.
- Solar Panel Not Charging:
- Ensure the solar panel is exposed to direct sunlight and not shaded.
- Clean the surface of the solar panel.
- Check connections between the solar panel and the battery/unit.
- Inaccurate Feed Times/Amounts:
- Re-program the digital timer carefully, following the instructions in Section 3.1.
- Adjust the feed duration as needed for desired output.
- Varmint Interference:
- Ensure the varmint cage is securely in place.
- Consider adding an optional shocking circuit if persistent issues occur.
