1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient use of your AL-KO BMP 14001 thermal water pump. Please read these instructions carefully before initial operation and keep them for future reference. The AL-KO BMP 14001 is a powerful gasoline engine pump designed for transferring large volumes of water, ideal for garden irrigation, emptying pools, or flood relief in areas without electrical power.
2. Safety Instructions
Always prioritize safety when operating the pump. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury or damage to the equipment.
- Fuel Handling: Gasoline is highly flammable. Always refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off and cool. Avoid spilling fuel.
- Exhaust Fumes: The engine produces carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas. Operate the pump only in open, well-ventilated areas. Never operate indoors.
- Water Type: The pump is not suitable for drinking water. It is only suitable for clear water and chlorinated water (pool water) below 35°C (95°F).
- Prohibited Liquids: Do not use the pump with saltwater, aggressive chemicals, flammable liquids, or water containing sand or abrasive particles.
- Hot Surfaces: The engine and exhaust system become very hot during operation. Avoid contact to prevent burns.
- Stable Placement: Always operate the pump on a stable, level surface to prevent tipping.
- Children and Bystanders: Keep children and bystanders away from the operating pump.

4. Setup
Proper setup is crucial for safe and efficient operation.
- Unpacking and Inspection: Carefully unpack the pump and check for any shipping damage or missing parts.
- Placement: Position the pump on a firm, level, and stable surface. Ensure adequate ventilation around the engine.
- Engine Oil: Before first use, fill the engine with the recommended 4-stroke engine oil to the correct level. The oil filler opening is easily accessible on the pump body for convenient maintenance. Refer to the engine manual for specific oil type and capacity.
- Fueling: Fill the fuel tank with unleaded gasoline. Ensure the engine is off and cool. Do not overfill. The fuel tank capacity is 1.6 liters.
- Hose Connections:
- Connect the suction hose to the inlet port (typically larger diameter). Ensure a tight, airtight connection to prevent air leaks, which can affect priming and performance. The connection diameter for both suction and pressure sides is 33.3 mm.
- Connect the pressure hose to the outlet port. Secure all connections with appropriate clamps.
- Priming the Pump: To ensure a smooth start, the pump circuit must be filled with water. Use the easy-fill spout located on top of the pump to fill the pump housing with water before starting the engine.
5. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps for safe and effective operation.
Starting the Engine:
- Ensure the fuel valve is open.
- Set the choke lever (if applicable) to the 'START' or 'CHOKE' position for a cold engine.
- Set the engine switch to 'ON'.
- Pull the starter cord firmly until the engine starts.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the 'RUN' position.
Pumping Operation:
Once the engine is running, the pump will begin to draw and discharge water. Monitor the flow and ensure the suction hose remains submerged in the water source.

Stopping the Engine:
- Set the engine switch to 'OFF'.
- Close the fuel valve.
- Allow the engine to cool down before handling or storing.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your pump.
- Engine Oil Check: Regularly check the engine oil level and top up or change as recommended in the engine manual.
- Air Filter: Inspect and clean the air filter periodically. Replace if damaged.
- Spark Plug: Check and clean the spark plug. Replace if worn.
- Cleaning: Keep the pump exterior clean. Remove any dirt or debris from the engine cooling fins.
- Storage: For long-term storage, drain the fuel tank and carburetor to prevent fuel degradation. Store the pump in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
7. Troubleshooting
If your pump is not operating correctly, check the following common issues:
- Engine Not Starting: Check fuel level, engine oil level, spark plug condition, and ensure the engine switch is 'ON' and fuel valve is open. Verify the choke setting for a cold engine.
- No Water Flow / Low Flow: Ensure the pump is properly primed (filled with water). Check for air leaks in the suction hose or connections. Verify the suction hose is fully submerged and not blocked. Check for blockages in the impeller or hoses.
- Excessive Vibration/Noise: Ensure the pump is on a stable, level surface. Check for loose components or foreign objects in the pump housing.
If problems persist after checking these points, consult a qualified service technician.
