SKF TKRS 21 Hand-Held Stroboscope

Model: TKRS 21

Brand: SKF

1. Introduction

The SKF TKRS 21 is a robust, hand-held stroboscope designed for visual inspection of rotating and reciprocating machinery. It allows for the apparent freezing of motion or slow-motion observation of equipment, enabling detailed inspection of components such as fan blades, belts, gears, and shafts without stopping the machinery. This instrument is essential for maintenance professionals to identify defects, monitor processes, and ensure operational efficiency in various industrial environments.

2. Safety Information

Always read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before operating the SKF TKRS 21. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage to the instrument.

  • Eye Protection: The stroboscope emits intense, rapidly flashing light. Prolonged exposure can cause discomfort or, in rare cases, trigger photosensitive epileptic seizures. Avoid looking directly into the light source. If you have a history of epilepsy or light sensitivity, consult a medical professional before use.
  • Operating Environment: Use the stroboscope in well-ventilated areas. Do not operate in explosive atmospheres or near flammable materials.
  • Electrical Safety: Ensure the battery compartment is securely closed before operation. Do not attempt to open or modify the device.
  • Handling: Handle the instrument with care. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to severe impacts.
  • Maintenance: Only perform maintenance as described in this manual. Refer all other servicing to qualified SKF personnel.

Key Components:

  • LED Array: High-intensity LEDs for bright and clear illumination.
  • LCD Display: Shows flash rate, units (RPM/Hz), and other operational information.
  • Control Dial: Used for adjusting the flash rate and navigating menus.
  • Function Buttons: For mode selection, fine-tuning, and other settings.
  • Battery Compartment: Located at the base of the handle.

5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover at the bottom of the stroboscope handle.
  2. Twist or slide the cover to open it (refer to markings on the device).
  3. Insert three (3) AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it firmly.

5.2 Powering On/Off

  • To power on the device, press and hold the power button (usually marked with a power symbol) until the display illuminates.
  • To power off, press and hold the power button again until the display turns off. The device may also have an auto-off feature to conserve battery life.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Basic Operation

  1. Power on the stroboscope. The display will show the current flash rate, typically in RPM (revolutions per minute) or Hz (Hertz).
  2. Point the stroboscope's LED array towards the rotating or reciprocating object you wish to inspect.
  3. Adjust the flash rate using the control dial. Rotate the dial to increase or decrease the flash frequency.
  4. Observe the object. When the stroboscope's flash rate matches the object's rotational speed, the object will appear to stand still. If the flash rate is slightly off, the object will appear to move slowly, allowing for detailed inspection.

6.2 Mode Selection (RPM/Hz)

The SKF TKRS 21 typically allows switching between RPM and Hz units for flash rate measurement. Refer to the device's specific buttons (e.g., "Mode" or "Unit") to toggle between these units. The selected unit will be displayed on the LCD screen.

6.3 Fine Adjustment

For precise synchronization, use the fine adjustment buttons (often marked with "fast" and "slow" arrows or similar symbols) to incrementally increase or decrease the flash rate. This allows for very accurate "freezing" of motion.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

  • Ensure the stroboscope is powered off before cleaning.
  • Wipe the exterior of the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the casing or display.
  • For the LED array and display, use a lint-free cloth.
  • Do not immerse the device in water or any other liquid.

7.2 Storage

  • When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and potential damage to the device.
  • Store the stroboscope in its protective carrying case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity.
