3. Controls and Functions

Figure 1: Top-down view of the JOYO Roll Boost Pedal, showing the Gain knob and footswitch.

Figure 2: Side view of the pedal, highlighting the input (IN) and output (OUT) jacks.
- Gain Knob: Controls the amount of boost applied to your signal. Turn clockwise to increase the boost level, counter-clockwise to decrease. The pedal can provide up to 35dB of clean boost.
- Footswitch: Engages or disengages the boost effect. This pedal features true bypass, ensuring your original tone remains unaffected when the pedal is off.
- LED Indicator: A small red LED light illuminates when the pedal is active (effect is on).
- IN Jack: 1/4-inch mono input jack for connecting your electric guitar or previous effects pedal in the signal chain.
- OUT Jack: 1/4-inch mono output jack for connecting to your amplifier or subsequent effects pedal.
- DC 9V Input: Power input for a 9V DC power adapter (center negative).
4. Setup
- Power Connection: Connect a 9V DC power adapter (center negative, not included) to the DC 9V input jack on the side of the pedal. Alternatively, the pedal can be powered by a 9V battery (not included) by opening the bottom plate.
- Input Connection: Connect your electric guitar to the 'IN' jack of the pedal using a 1/4-inch instrument cable. If using other effects pedals, connect the output of the previous pedal to the 'IN' jack.
- Output Connection: Connect the 'OUT' jack of the pedal to your guitar amplifier's input or to the input of the next effects pedal in your signal chain using a 1/4-inch instrument cable.
- Initial Settings: Start with the 'Gain' knob set to its minimum position (fully counter-clockwise) before engaging the pedal to avoid sudden volume spikes.
5. Operating Instructions
- Engaging the Effect: Press the footswitch to activate the Roll Boost effect. The LED indicator will illuminate, signifying that the boost is active.
- Adjusting the Boost: While the effect is engaged, slowly turn the 'Gain' knob clockwise to increase the boost level. Adjust to your desired volume and tonal impact. The pedal provides a clean boost, enhancing your signal without adding significant coloration or distortion.
- Disengaging the Effect: Press the footswitch again to bypass the effect. The LED indicator will turn off, and your signal will pass through the pedal unaffected due to its true bypass circuitry.
- Placement in Signal Chain: The Roll Boost pedal can be placed at various points in your signal chain depending on the desired effect. Placing it before overdrive/distortion pedals can increase their saturation, while placing it after can provide a clean volume boost for solos.
6. Maintenance
- Keep the pedal clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth.
- Avoid exposing the pedal to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- When not in use for extended periods, disconnect the power supply or remove the battery to prevent drainage.
7. Troubleshooting
- No Sound:
- Ensure all cables are securely connected to the correct input/output jacks.
- Verify the power supply is correctly connected and functioning (9V DC, center negative).
- Check if the guitar and amplifier are working correctly.
- Unexpected Noise:
- Ensure all connections are secure and cables are not damaged.
- Use a high-quality, regulated 9V DC power supply to avoid hum or other electrical interference.
- Test the pedal in a different power outlet or with a different power supply.
- Effect Not Engaging:
- Check the power supply. The LED indicator should light up when engaged.
- Ensure the footswitch is functioning correctly.
