4. Setup and Operating Instructions

Always consult your vehicle's specific service manual for detailed timing procedures and torque specifications before using these tools. This tool set is designed to assist in maintaining correct engine timing, not to replace proper diagnostic and repair procedures.

General Usage Guidelines:

  1. Preparation: Ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the battery. Remove any components obstructing access to the camshafts and crankshaft timing marks.
  2. Crankshaft Positioning: Rotate the crankshaft until the engine is at Top Dead Center (TDC) for cylinder 1. Insert the appropriate crankshaft TDC timing pin into its designated hole to lock the crankshaft in position.
  3. Diagram showing a timing pin inserted into the crankshaft to lock it at TDC.

Image 4: Crankshaft TDC Timing Pin in use (diagram).

  4. Camshaft Alignment: Once the crankshaft is locked, position the camshafts so that the camshaft alignment bar can be inserted into the slots at the rear of the camshafts. This locks the camshafts in their correct timed position.
  5. Diagram showing the camshaft alignment bar inserted into the camshaft slots.

Image 5: Camshaft Alignment Bar in use (diagram).

  6. Service: With both the crankshaft and camshafts locked, proceed with timing belt/chain replacement or other necessary engine services.
  7. Reassembly: After completing the service, remove the alignment tools. Carefully rotate the engine manually through two full revolutions to ensure no interference and that timing marks align correctly. Reassemble all removed components.

Specific Tool Combinations:

  • For 2.0L DOHC Zetec engines found in 1994–2003 Ford and Mercury vehicles, use the flat bar and the long timing pin.
  • For 2.0L, 2.3L 4V, and 2.5L DOHC engines found in 2004–2012 Ford, Mazda, and Mercury vehicles, use the flat bar and the short timing pin.
  • The flat bar can also be used by itself on 2.0L DOHC engines found in 1993–1994 Ford Probes.

Important Considerations:

  • Cam Gear Torquing: Do not use the provided camshaft alignment bar to hold the cam gears while torquing them. Use the hexes machined into the camshafts for a wrench to hold them securely during torquing. Using the alignment bar for this purpose can lead to slight timing inaccuracies.
  • Crankshaft Pulley: Note that the crankshaft, timing gear on the crank, and crank pulley are typically not keyed on these engines. All must be timed correctly. Use the bolt hole in the crank pulley to hold the crank pulley in time.
  • Crank Pulley Bolt: Always use a dedicated crank pulley holder to torque the crank pulley bolt. Do not use the crank timing bolt or pin for this purpose, as it is not designed to withstand the high torque required and may cause damage to the tool or engine.

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and reliability of your Orion Motor Tech Camshaft Alignment Tool Set, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean the tools thoroughly to remove any oil, grease, or debris. Use a clean cloth and a mild degreaser if necessary.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the tools for any signs of wear, damage, or deformation. Pay close attention to the threading on the timing pins and the integrity of the alignment bar.
  • Storage: Store the tools in their original case or a suitable protective container in a dry environment to prevent corrosion and damage.
  • Lubrication: A light coat of oil on the timing pins can help prevent rust during storage.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues during the use of this tool set, consider the following:

  • Tools Not Fitting: Double-check the vehicle compatibility chart and ensure you are using the correct timing pin for your specific engine year and model. Verify that the engine is at the correct TDC position before attempting to insert the tools.
  • Difficulty Inserting Tools: Ensure that the camshafts and crankshaft are precisely aligned. Do not force the tools into position, as this can cause damage to the engine or the tools. Slight manual adjustment of the crankshaft or camshafts may be necessary to allow the tools to slide in freely.
  • Tool Damage: If a tool appears bent or damaged, do not use it. Using compromised tools can lead to inaccurate timing or severe engine damage. Contact customer support for replacement.
  • Timing Inaccuracy After Service: Re-verify all timing marks and tool usage steps. Ensure that the crank pulley bolt was torqued using a proper holder and not the timing pin. Consult your vehicle's service manual for detailed timing verification procedures.
