Key Features:
- Flow Rate: 96 Gallons Per Minute (GPM) for efficient water circulation.
- Internal Piping: Features 2.5-inch internal piping for improved flow and reduced system noise.
- Durable Construction: Built with a fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene body for superior strength and longevity.
- D.E. Grids: Utilizes industry-proven Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) grids for fine particle filtration.
- Secure Closure: Equipped with a heavy-duty tamper-proof clamp for a secure and leak-free seal.
3. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the efficient operation and longevity of your D.E. filter. It is recommended that installation be performed by a qualified pool professional.
3.1 Site Selection:
- Choose a level, solid surface, preferably concrete, that can support the weight of the filter when filled with water.
- Ensure adequate clearance around the filter for maintenance and servicing.
- Locate the filter as close to the pool as possible to minimize plumbing runs and maximize efficiency.
- Protect the filter from direct sunlight and harsh weather conditions if possible, or ensure it is rated for outdoor use.
3.2 Plumbing Connections:
- Connect the pool pump's discharge line to the filter's "INLET" port.
- Connect the filter's "OUTLET" port to the pool's return line.
- Ensure all connections are tight and sealed to prevent leaks. Use appropriate thread sealant for threaded connections.
- Install a pressure gauge on the filter head to monitor operating pressure.
- Ensure proper drainage is available for backwashing and maintenance.
3.3 Initial Start-Up:
- Before adding D.E. powder, ensure the filter tank is filled with water.
- With the pump off, open the air relief valve on top of the filter.
- Start the pump and allow the filter to fill with water, expelling air through the air relief valve. Close the valve once a steady stream of water emerges.
- Add the recommended amount of D.E. powder (refer to your pool size and filter capacity) into the skimmer while the pump is running. The D.E. will be drawn into the filter and coat the grids.
- Note the initial operating pressure after the D.E. has coated the grids. This is your clean filter pressure.
4. Operating Instructions
Once installed and primed, your Waterway Crystal Water D.E. filter operates continuously to keep your pool water clean.
4.1 Normal Operation:
- The filter should run daily for a sufficient period to circulate all pool water at least once. Consult your pool professional for recommended run times based on pool size and usage.
- Monitor the pressure gauge regularly. As the filter collects debris, the pressure will gradually rise.
4.2 Backwashing:
Backwashing is necessary when the filter pressure rises 8-10 PSI above the clean filter pressure, or when water clarity diminishes. This process removes accumulated debris from the D.E. grids.
- Turn off the pool pump.
- Open the backwash valve or port (if applicable) to direct water to waste.
- Turn on the pump and backwash until the water running to waste is clear (typically 2-3 minutes).
- Turn off the pump.
- Close the backwash valve and open the air relief valve.
- Turn on the pump and allow the filter to fill with water, expelling air. Close the air relief valve.
- Add the appropriate amount of fresh D.E. powder to the skimmer while the pump is running to re-coat the grids.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your Waterway D.E. filter.
5.1 Grid Cleaning:
Periodically (at least once per swimming season or more frequently if needed), the D.E. grids should be removed and thoroughly cleaned. This involves disassembling the filter and hosing down the grids to remove caked-on D.E. and debris. Chemical cleaning may be necessary to remove oils and scale.
5.2 O-Ring Lubrication:
Inspect and lubricate the tank O-ring and other accessible O-rings with a silicone-based lubricant during grid cleaning. This helps maintain a proper seal and prevents leaks.
5.3 Winterization (if applicable):
In colder climates, the filter must be properly winterized to prevent freeze damage. This typically involves draining all water from the filter, removing the D.E. grids, and storing them in a dry, protected area. Consult local guidelines for specific winterization procedures.
6. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your D.E. filter.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Low Water Flow / High Pressure | Clogged D.E. grids; dirty pump basket/skimmer; closed valves. | Backwash filter; clean pump basket/skimmer; check and open all valves. |
| Water Leaking from Filter | Damaged O-ring; loose clamp; cracked tank. | Inspect and replace O-ring; tighten clamp; inspect tank for damage. |
| D.E. Returning to Pool | Damaged D.E. grids; improper D.E. application; torn manifold. | Inspect and replace damaged grids; ensure proper D.E. dosage; inspect manifold. |
| Cloudy Pool Water | Insufficient filtration time; dirty filter; improper chemical balance. | Increase pump run time; backwash/clean filter; test and adjust pool chemistry. |
If you are unable to resolve an issue using the troubleshooting guide, please contact a qualified pool technician or Waterway Plastics customer support.
