2. Initial Setup
2.1 Battery Installation
The CareSens N meter comes with batteries pre-installed. If replacement is needed, use 2 CR2032 batteries. Ensure correct polarity when inserting new batteries.

Figure 2.1: The CareSens N meter is UL 4200A compliant for battery safety. Instructions for opening the battery compartment are shown.
2.2 Test Strip Insertion
The CareSens N Diabetes Test Strip is auto-coded, meaning it automatically recognizes the batch code encrypted on the test strip. Simply insert the test strip into the meter.

Figure 2.2: The CareSens N meter uses universal test strips. Insert the test strip firmly into the meter's port.
3. Operating Instructions: Performing a Blood Glucose Test
3.1 Preparing the Lancing Device
Load a new lancet into the lancing device. Adjust the depth setting on the lancing device according to your comfort level. Refer to the lancing device's separate instructions for detailed guidance.
3.2 Obtaining a Blood Sample
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, then dry them completely. This helps ensure an accurate reading. Prick the side of your fingertip with the lancing device to obtain a small drop of blood.
3.3 Applying Blood to the Test Strip
Once the meter is ready (displaying the blood drop symbol), touch the tip of the test strip to the blood sample. The meter requires only a small blood sample size of 0.5 µL. The blood will be drawn into the strip automatically.

Figure 3.1: Ensure the blood sample is applied to the TIP POINT of the test strip, not on the top or bottom, to avoid error messages.
3.4 Reading Results
The CareSens N Blood Glucose Meter provides fast results in just 5 seconds. Your blood glucose reading will appear on the meter's display.

4. Care and Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning the Meter
Wipe the meter exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not immerse the meter in water or use harsh cleaning agents. Ensure the meter is dry before storage.
4.2 Storage
Store the CareSens N meter, test strips, and lancets in the provided travel case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep out of reach of children.
4.3 Control Solution Testing
Use the control solution to verify the accuracy of your meter and test strips. Perform a control solution test when opening a new vial of test strips, if you suspect the meter is not working correctly, or if your results are inconsistent with how you feel. Refer to the control solution instructions for specific procedures and acceptable ranges.

5. Troubleshooting Common Issues
5.1 Error Messages
If your meter displays an error code, consult the following explanations:
- Error 1 (Er-1): Occurs when a used strip is inserted. Always apply your blood sample to the strip AFTER inserting the strip into the meter.
- Error 4 (Er-4): Occurs when the blood sample has insufficient volume or is not applied correctly. Ensure the blood sample is applied at the TIP of the test strip.

Figure 5.1: Common error messages and their solutions.
5.2 Inconsistent Readings
Several factors can lead to variations in blood glucose readings:
- Not washing hands thoroughly: Residue on hands can affect readings. Always wash and dry hands completely before testing.
- Measuring back-to-back multiple times: Blood samples may have differing amounts of cells and interstitial fluid, causing slight variations.
- Not applying enough blood to test strip: Insufficient sample volume can lead to inaccurate results.
- Comparing readings between different meters: Results between different brands may vary due to algorithm differences. Do not compare among brands.
