Figure 2.1: The Scheppach HBS400 Band Saw, showing the main unit mounted on its stand, a spare saw blade, and the included cross-cut gauge.
2.1 Key Features
- Powerful 750 Watt motor for efficient cutting.
- Two saw blade speeds (360 m/min and 720 m/min) for various materials.
- Large cutting capacity: 170 mm cutting height and 305 mm cutting width.
- Extendable aluminum saw table for supporting large workpieces.
- Double-sided guided rip fence for precise straight cuts.
- Continuously swiveling saw table for angle cuts from 0° to 45°.
- Ball-bearing blade guides for smooth blade operation and improved cut quality.
- Dust extraction port for a cleaner work environment.
3. Setup and Assembly
Unpack all components and ensure they are present and undamaged. Assembly typically involves attaching the band saw unit to its stand, installing the saw blade, and setting up the rip fence and cross-cut gauge.
3.1 Stand Assembly
- Assemble the stand components according to the diagrams provided in the separate assembly guide.
- Ensure all bolts and fasteners are securely tightened.
- Attach the band saw unit to the assembled stand, ensuring it is stable and level.
3.2 Saw Blade Installation and Tensioning
- Disconnect power. Open the upper and lower blade covers.
- Carefully place the saw blade around the upper and lower band wheels, ensuring the teeth are pointing downwards towards the table.
- Adjust the blade tension knob (usually located at the top of the saw) until the blade is taut but not overly tight. The blade should deflect slightly when pressed gently.
- Adjust the blade tracking so the blade runs centrally on the band wheels.
- Close the blade covers.
3.3 Blade Guide Adjustment
Properly adjusted blade guides are crucial for accurate cuts and blade longevity.

Figure 3.1: Ball-bearing blade guides ensuring smooth and stable blade operation during cutting.
- Adjust the upper blade guide assembly so it is approximately 3-6 mm above the workpiece.
- Ensure the side guides are close to the blade but not touching, allowing the blade to run freely.
- The thrust bearing (behind the blade) should be just behind the blade, not touching when the blade is idle, but supporting it during cutting.
3.4 Rip Fence and Cross-Cut Gauge Installation
Install the rip fence onto the saw table. The double-sided guided rip fence can be easily locked with its quick-release fastener for precise straight cuts.

Figure 3.2: Illustration of the HBS400's double-sided guided rip fence, which ensures greater precision compared to conventional single-sided fences.
The cross-cut gauge slides into the miter slot on the table and is used for making accurate cross-cuts and angled cuts.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Powering On/Off
- To turn on the saw, press the green "ON" button.
- To turn off the saw, press the red "OFF" button.
- Always allow the blade to reach full speed before beginning a cut.
4.2 Selecting Blade Speed
The HBS400 offers two blade speeds (360 m/min and 720 m/min). Select the appropriate speed based on the material being cut. Slower speeds are generally for harder materials or intricate cuts, while faster speeds are for softer woods and general ripping.

4.3 Types of Cuts
The HBS400 is capable of various cutting operations, including rip cuts, angle cuts, and curve cuts.

Figure 4.2: Examples of cutting applications: rip cutting (Auftrennen), angle cutting (Winkelschnitt), and curve cutting (Kurvenschnitt).
4.3.1 Straight Cuts (Rip Cuts)
- Adjust the rip fence to the desired width.
- Ensure the workpiece is flat on the table and against the fence.
- Feed the workpiece slowly and steadily into the blade.
4.3.2 Angle Cuts
The saw table can be continuously swiveled for angle cuts from 0° to 45°.

Figure 4.3: Demonstrating an angle cut, made possible by the continuously swiveling saw table (0°-45°).
- Loosen the table locking mechanism and tilt the table to the desired angle.
- Securely lock the table in place.
- Use the cross-cut gauge or a suitable jig to guide the workpiece.
4.3.3 Curve Cuts
- For curve cuts, remove the rip fence.
- Use a narrower blade for tighter curves.
- Feed the workpiece slowly, guiding it carefully along the desired curve.

Figure 4.4: The HBS400 is suitable for processing both soft and hardwood. Its versatility with various blade widths allows for intricate and delicate sawing tasks.
4.4 Working with Large Workpieces
The stable, extendable aluminum saw table is designed to support extra-large workpieces, providing a secure and stable surface for cutting.

5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your band saw. Always disconnect the power supply before performing any maintenance.
5.1 Cleaning
- After each use, clear sawdust and debris from the table, blade guides, and inside the blade covers.
- Use a brush or vacuum cleaner. Do not use compressed air as it can force dust into bearings.
- Ensure the dust extraction port is clear for optimal performance.
5.2 Blade Replacement
Replace dull or damaged blades promptly. Refer to section 3.2 for blade installation steps.
5.3 General Inspection
- Periodically check all fasteners for tightness.
- Inspect the power cord for damage.
- Ensure all safety guards are in place and functioning correctly.
6. Troubleshooting
