2. Safety Information and Warnings

Read and understand all instructions before using this respirator. Failure to follow instructions may result in serious injury or death.

2.1 General Safety Precautions

  • This respirator does not supply oxygen. Use only in adequately ventilated areas where oxygen concentration is not less than 19.5%.
  • Do not use in atmospheres immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
  • Do not use for protection against gases or vapors unless specifically stated. The activated carbon layer is for nuisance odor absorption, not for protection against toxic gases or vapors.
  • Leave the contaminated area immediately if breathing becomes difficult, dizziness or other distress occurs, or if you smell or taste contaminants.
  • Do not alter or modify the respirator.
  • Dispose of the respirator if it becomes damaged or breathing resistance increases significantly.

2.2 Standards and Approvals

This respirator is approved to EN 149:2001+A1:2009 as an FFP2 NR D filtering half mask. This standard specifies minimum requirements for filtering half masks as respiratory protective devices.

3. Components and Parts Identification

The VENUS V-425 SLOV-V respirator consists of the following main components:

  1. Filter Media: Multi-layered superior microfibre material that filters particulate matter.
  2. Activated Carbon Layer: Integrated within the filter media for odor absorption.
  3. FR Fabric Outer Layer: The outermost layer, resistant to sparks.
  4. Stay Cool Butterfly Vent Valve: Located centrally, designed to release exhaled air and reduce heat buildup.
  5. Nose Clip: An adjustable metal strip embedded at the top edge to conform to the nose bridge.
  6. Elastic Head Straps: Two elastic bands for securing the respirator to the head.
  7. Unique Fit Adjuster: A mechanism on the straps or mask body to optimize fit.

Refer to the product image in Section 1 for a visual representation of these components.

4. Setup and Donning Instructions

Proper donning is crucial for effective protection. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Inspect Respirator: Before each use, visually inspect the respirator for any damage, tears, or defects in the filter material, valve, nose clip, and straps. Do not use if damaged.
  2. Position Respirator: Hold the respirator in your hand with the nose clip facing upwards. Place the respirator over your nose and mouth, ensuring it covers your chin.
  3. Secure Head Straps: Pull the lower strap over your head and position it below your ears. Pull the upper strap over your head and position it above your ears, around the crown of your head. Adjust the straps for a comfortable and secure fit, using the unique fit adjuster if present.
  4. Adjust Nose Clip: Using both hands, mold the nose clip firmly around your nose bridge to achieve a tight seal. Do not pinch with one hand, as this may result in a less effective seal.
  5. Perform Seal Check:
    • Positive Pressure Seal Check: Exhale sharply. If air leaks around the edges, re-adjust the nose clip and straps until no leakage is detected.
    • Negative Pressure Seal Check: Inhale sharply. The respirator should collapse slightly. If air leaks around the edges, re-adjust the nose clip and straps until no leakage is detected.
  6. If you cannot achieve a proper seal, do not enter the contaminated area. Consult your supervisor or safety officer.

5. Operating and Usage Instructions

The VENUS V-425 SLOV-V respirator is intended for use in environments requiring protection against particulate matter and nuisance odors, particularly during welding operations.

5.1 Intended Use

  • Protection against solid and liquid aerosols (particulates) in concentrations up to 10 times the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) or 4 times the OEL for FFP1, as per EN 149:2001+A1:2009 FFP2 NR D classification.
  • Suitable for welding, grinding, sanding, and other industrial applications generating fine dust and particulate matter.
  • The activated carbon layer helps in absorbing obnoxious smells, improving user comfort in certain environments.
  • The FR fabric outer layer provides enhanced safety against sparks encountered during welding.

5.2 Usage Duration

The 'NR' designation (Non-Reusable) indicates that the respirator is intended for single shift use only. Dispose of the respirator after one shift or if it becomes damaged, breathing resistance increases, or if you detect odors or tastes of contaminants.

6. Maintenance and Storage

This respirator is a disposable, non-reusable device. It cannot be cleaned or disinfected.

6.1 Maintenance

  • No maintenance is required for this disposable respirator.
  • Do not attempt to wash, clean, or repair the respirator. Such actions may compromise its protective capabilities.
  • Replace the respirator immediately if it becomes damaged, soiled, or if breathing resistance increases.

6.2 Storage

  • Store the respirator in its original packaging in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and chemical contaminants.
  • Ensure the storage area is free from dust and moisture.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues while using the VENUS V-425 SLOV-V respirator, consider the following:

  • Difficulty Breathing: If breathing becomes difficult, the filter may be clogged. Replace the respirator immediately.
  • Poor Seal / Air Leakage: Re-adjust the nose clip and head straps. Ensure the respirator is correctly positioned over your face. If a proper seal cannot be achieved, the respirator may be the wrong size or damaged; replace it.
  • Detection of Odors/Tastes: If you begin to smell or taste contaminants, the activated carbon layer may be saturated, or the filter's capacity may be exceeded. Leave the contaminated area and replace the respirator.
  • Discomfort: Ensure the straps are not too tight or too loose. Adjust the fit adjuster for optimal comfort. If discomfort persists, ensure the respirator is correctly sized for your face.
  • Visible Damage: Any visible damage to the filter material, valve, straps, or nose clip renders the respirator ineffective. Dispose of it and use a new one.
