3. Safety Information

To ensure safe and proper operation of your scale, please observe the following:

  • Do not overload the scale beyond its maximum capacity of 50g.
  • Avoid dropping or subjecting the scale to strong impacts.
  • Keep the scale away from extreme temperatures, humidity, and strong electromagnetic fields.
  • Do not immerse the scale in water or other liquids.
  • Use only the specified battery type (2 x AAA) or the provided USB cable for power.
  • Store the scale in a clean, dry environment when not in use.

4. Setup

4.1 Power Supply

The scale can be powered by two AAA batteries (included) or via the provided USB cable connected to a suitable power source (e.g., computer USB port, USB wall adapter).

  • Battery Installation: Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the scale and insert 2 AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-).
  • USB Power: Connect the small end of the USB cable to the scale's USB port and the larger end to a USB power source.

4.2 Placement

For accurate readings, place the scale on a hard, flat, and stable surface. Avoid surfaces that vibrate or are exposed to drafts, as these can affect precision.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off

Press the ON/OFF button to turn the scale on or off. The display will show "88888" and then "0.000g" when ready for use.

5.2 Unit Conversion

Press the MODE button to cycle through the available weighing units: grams (g), ounces (oz), troy ounces (ozt), pennyweights (dwt), carats (ct), and grains (gn).

The scale supports 6 different weighing units for versatility.

5.3 Tare Function

The tare function allows you to subtract the weight of a container, so you only measure the net weight of the contents.

  1. Place the empty container or tray on the weighing pan.
  2. Press the TARE button. The display will reset to "0.000g".
  3. Add the item you wish to weigh into the container. The display will show the net weight of the item.
Four-step illustration of the tare function: 1. Place container, 2. Press TARE to zero, 3. Add item, 4. Read net weight.

5.4 Counting Function (PCS)

The PCS function allows you to count multiple pieces of an item based on a sample quantity.

  1. Turn on the scale and ensure it is in weighing mode (g).
  2. Press the PCS button. The display will show a sample quantity (e.g., "25 PCS").
  3. Press the MODE button to select the desired sample quantity (25, 50, 75, or 100 pieces).
  4. Place the exact number of sample pieces (e.g., 25 pieces) onto the weighing pan.
  5. Press the PCS button again to confirm the sample. The display will show "PCS" and the number of pieces.
  6. You can now add more items, and the scale will count them based on the sample weight.

5.5 Calibration

Calibration ensures the accuracy of your scale. It is recommended to calibrate the scale regularly or if you notice inconsistent readings.

  1. Turn on the scale.
  2. Press and hold the MODE button for 6+ seconds until the display starts to flash "20.000".
  3. Place one 20g calibration weight onto the center of the weighing platform. The display will then flash "40.000".
  4. Place the second 20g calibration weight onto the platform, alongside the first one, for a total of 40g.
  5. The display will show "PASS" and then return to normal weighing mode, indicating successful calibration. Remove the calibration weights.
Four-step illustration of the calibration process: 1. Turn on scale, 2. Press MODE for 6+ seconds until 20.000 flashes, place 20g weight, 3. Display flashes 40.000, place another 20g weight, 4. Display shows PASS, calibration complete.

5.6 Best Practice for Small Measurements (Addressing "Floating Zero")

When weighing very small amounts, especially when adding material slowly or in tiny increments, the scale may exhibit a 'floating zero' behavior, where small additions might not register immediately or accurately if starting from a zeroed state. This is due to the scale's sensitivity threshold (it may not register weights below 9-15mg when starting from zero).

To ensure maximum accuracy for very small or incremental measurements, follow this method:

  1. Turn on the scale.
  2. Place your empty weighing pan/tray on the scale. DO NOT press the TARE button to zero it out. Note the weight of the empty tray (e.g., 3.090g).
  3. Begin adding your material to the tray. Calculate your target total weight by adding the desired material weight to the initial tray weight (e.g., if tray is 3.090g and you want 30mg of material, aim for a total display of 3.090g + 0.030g = 3.120g).
  4. By always having a base weight on the scale (the tray's weight), the scale remains active and registers even the smallest additions more consistently.

This method helps overcome the initial threshold and ensures accurate readings for micro-measurements.

The scale is versatile for various precise weighing tasks.

6. Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance will extend the life of your scale and ensure continued accuracy.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the scale with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the scale in water.
  • Storage: Store the scale in a clean, dry place at room temperature. Avoid storing it in areas with high humidity, dust, or extreme temperature fluctuations.
  • Battery Replacement: If the display shows a low battery indicator, replace the AAA batteries promptly. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your MAXUS Digital Milligram Scale, please refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Scale does not turn onLow or dead batteries; incorrect battery installation; no USB power.Replace batteries; check battery polarity; ensure USB cable is securely connected to a working power source.
Inaccurate or inconsistent readingsUnstable surface; drafts; scale needs calibration; overload; "floating zero" issue for small weights.Place on a stable, level surface away from drafts; perform calibration (see Section 5.5); do not exceed 50g capacity; for small weights, use the method described in Section 5.6.
Display shows "EEEE"Overload error.Remove the item immediately. Do not exceed the maximum capacity of 50g.
Display shows "UNST"Unstable reading.Ensure the scale is on a stable surface and there are no vibrations or air currents.

If the problem persists after trying these solutions, please refer to the official user guide PDF or contact MAXUS customer support.
