1. Introduction

The Zoom LiveTrak L-8 is a versatile digital mixer and multitrack recorder designed for podcasting, music production, and live performances. This device allows users to mix, monitor, and record audio with professional quality in a portable format. It integrates a mixer, a multitrack recorder, and an audio interface into a single unit.

2. What's in the Box

3. Initial Setup

3.1 Powering the Device

The LiveTrak L-8 can be powered using the included AD-17 AC adapter or by two Lithium Metal AA batteries. For extended use or when phantom power is required, AC adapter use is recommended.

  • AC Power: Connect the AD-17 AC adapter to the DC 5V port on the rear of the unit and plug it into a standard wall outlet.
  • Battery Power: Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the unit and insert two Lithium Metal AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity.

3.2 Connecting Microphones and Instruments

The L-8 features 6 XLR-1/4" combo inputs (channels 1-6) for microphones and line-level instruments, and two additional line inputs (channels 7/8) for stereo sources. Channels 1-2 also support Hi-Z input for direct guitar/bass connection.

  • XLR Inputs: Connect dynamic or condenser microphones using XLR cables.
  • Phantom Power: For condenser microphones requiring +48V phantom power, activate the +48V switch. Note that phantom power is applied globally to all 6 XLR inputs simultaneously.
  • Line Inputs: Connect instruments or other audio devices using 1/4" TS/TRS cables to channels 1-6, or stereo sources to channels 7/8.

3.3 SD Card Installation

The LiveTrak L-8 records audio directly to an SD card. Ensure a compatible SD, SDHC, or SDXC card (up to 512 GB) is inserted into the SD card slot on the side of the unit before recording.

4. Operating the LiveTrak L-8

4.1 Basic Controls

  • Gain Knobs: Adjust the input sensitivity for each channel. Use the -26dB pad switch for high-level inputs to prevent clipping.
  • Faders: Control the volume level of each channel in the mix.
  • Channel Strip: Each channel (1-6) includes a 3-band EQ (HIGH, MID, LOW) and PAN control. Channels 7/8 have a 2-band EQ.
  • EFX Send: Adjust the amount of signal sent from each channel to the internal effects processor.
  • Master Fader: Controls the overall output volume.

4.2 Recording

The L-8 allows for simultaneous multitrack recording of up to 10 tracks (8 input channels + stereo mix) directly to an SD card.

  • Arming Tracks: Press the REC/PLAY button on each channel you wish to record. The button will illuminate red.
  • Start Recording: Press the main RECORDER button (yellow) to begin recording.
  • Stop Recording: Press the main RECORDER button again to stop.
  • Overdubbing: The L-8 supports overdubbing. Arm the desired track and press RECORDER while playing back existing tracks.

4.3 Mixing and Effects

Adjust channel faders and EQ settings to create your desired mix. The L-8 includes built-in effects such as reverb, delay, and chorus.

  • Applying Effects: Use the EFFECT button to access and select different effects. Adjust the EFX RTN (Effect Return) fader to control the overall effect level in the mix.

4.4 Sound Pads

The L-8 features 6 assignable sound pads for triggering jingles, sound effects, or music during podcasts or live streams.

  • Triggering Sounds: Press a sound pad to play its assigned audio.
  • Assigning Sounds: Refer to the on-screen menu for instructions on loading and assigning custom audio files to the sound pads.

4.5 Monitoring

The L-8 provides three independent monitor mixes (Mix A, Mix B, Mix C) for headphones, allowing different performers or hosts to hear customized mixes.

  • Adjusting Monitor Mixes: Use the dedicated Mix A, Mix B, and Mix C knobs to adjust the levels for each monitor output.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

To maintain the performance and appearance of your LiveTrak L-8, follow these cleaning guidelines:

  • Always disconnect the power adapter before cleaning.
  • Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior surfaces.
  • For stubborn dirt, lightly dampen the cloth with water. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes.
  • Do not allow liquids to enter the unit.

5.2 Storage

When not in use for extended periods, store the LiveTrak L-8 in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if storing for more than a few weeks to prevent leakage.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your LiveTrak L-8.

6.1 No Power

  • Ensure the AC adapter is securely connected to both the unit and a working power outlet.
  • If using batteries, check that they are correctly inserted and have sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.

6.2 No Audio Input

  • Verify that microphones or instruments are properly connected to the correct input jacks.
  • Check the gain knob for the respective channel; ensure it is turned up sufficiently.
  • For condenser microphones, ensure +48V phantom power is activated. Remember it applies to all 6 XLR inputs.
  • Confirm that the channel fader is raised and not muted.

6.3 Recording Issues

  • Ensure an SD card is inserted and has sufficient free space.
  • Verify that the desired tracks are armed for recording (REC/PLAY button illuminated red).
  • Check the SD card for compatibility and proper formatting.

6.4 USB Connectivity Issues

  • Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the L-8 and your computer.
  • Install the necessary drivers from the official Zoom website for your operating system.
  • Select the LiveTrak L-8 as the audio input/output device in your computer's sound settings and recording software.
